Pneumonia Or Murder? The Death of Baby Breanna Loveless

brianna-lovelessPhoto of 9-month-old Breanna Marie Courtney Loveless May 22, 1995 – Feb 22, 1996

(Some reports have Brianna Loveless as her name but according to her gravestone it’s Breanna Loveless.)

Breanna Loveless was born in Delta, Utah on May 22, 1995 to Ricky Lee Sanders and Dawn Loveless Wittison who is known by many as Bobbie Dawn Wittison. She was the youngest of three siblings, all girls.

Sadly, nine months after being born the blond-haired baby girl would die, and the cause-of-death quickly became controversial.

In 1996, Breanna Loveless died of pneumonia, at least that’s what her death certificate states. But the bruises, tears, broken collarbone, and multiple broken bones of different ages told a different story. One of abuse and torture.

“We were suspicious at the beginning because it looked like she hadn’t been taken care of,” said Jim Masner, a detective of Millard County Sheriff’s Office who worked on her case.

When paramedics arrived Breanna was in a full, soggy diaper that hadn’t appeared to have been changed for sometime.

Left photo shows Breanna Loveless smiling in a baby tub. The right side photos are Breanna’s autopsy photos.

Breanna’s mother, Bobbie Widdison, divorced Ricky Sanders and started a relationship with Sanders brother, Travis Widdison. Travis moved in with Bobbie and was living there during the time of Breanna’s death. Both told conflicting stories that didn’t add up. They said 9-month-old Breanna bruised herself by bumping into the crib, and that her broken bones came from being wedged in the crib bars. They also said she had “brittle bone disease” and bruised easily. This excuses given were very similar to that of Baby Alissa Guernsey.

Investigators had to figure out who hurt the little girl and how she died. They weren’t buying the excuses.

Masner, who had never investigated a child homicide, sought help from wherever he could get it. He called Primary Children’s Medical Center, the attorney general’s office, and federal experts in Quantico, Virginia.

Robert Kirschner, a Chicago-based forensic pathologist who has since died, bridged the evidentiary gap.

The state medical examiner testified that the immediate cause of death was pneumonia, but the girl had suffered physical abuse that so weakened her she could not fight off an illness that probably would not have been fatal.

Breanna’s “death is an example of fatal abuse without ‘fatal’ injuries,” Kirschner wrote in a report. “This is very common in children who have been repetitively beaten; the pneumonia basically acts as the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

BobbieDawnWiddison

Bobbie Widdison contends that she found her daughter face-down in her crib. However, prosecutors say the position of the baby’s body – which already was in a state of rigor mortis when paramedics arrived – suggests she was on her back at the time of death.

The trial began with attorneys questioning Millard County deputy sheriffs who responded to a call of a baby not breathing at the Widdisons’ apartment, 395 E. 400 South, Delta, during the early morning hours of Feb. 22, 1996.

Deputy Morris Burton said that when he entered the apartment the baby was “stiff and cold” and had “what appeared to be bruises on her face.”

Deputy Brett Nielson testified that Travis Widdison told him the baby was put to bed at 9:30 p.m. the previous night. Bobbie and Travis Widdison then went next door to play cards with friends, and Bobbie Widdison returned at 11 p.m. to check on Breanna.

The deputy testified that Bobbie Widdison said the child was fine when she checked on her. But the couple said the baby was dead when they returned to the apartment after midnight.

breanna-loveless

Alan Smith, a Delta physician who had previously treated Loveless, was present on Feb. 22, 1996 when paramedics brought her to the emergency room. He tried unsuccessfully to revive her.

Smith said she was examined after her death and found to have numerous bruises, abrasions and scratches. She also had a broken collarbone, broken bones in both arms and one leg. Upon cross-examination by Gaither, Smith testified that Loveless had evidence of both viral and bacterial infections before her death. She also had been diagnosed with bronchitis, which could have led to pneumonia.

A 4th District jury found Bobbie Widdison guilty of murder for beating Breanna to death and six counts of child abuse. She was sentenced to five years to life in prison. Travis Widdison was found guilty on three child-abuse counts and sentenced to up to five years in prison.

The Widdisons maintained their innocence throughout the court proceedings.

A judge has dismissed a murder charge against Travis Widdison in the 1996 death of 9-month-old Breanna Loveless. Murder and multiple child-abuse charges remain against the child’s mother, Bobbie Dawn Widdison.

So what did kill Baby Breanna Marie Loveless? It seems the only people who truly know aren’t willing to budge.

Saudi child was raped and tortured to death by her own FATHER after her doubted her virginity

Lama Al Ghamdi

Feb 16, 2013, SAUDI ARABIA — Many in the Saudi community are outraged after hearing news that a father, who had raped and tortured his child to death, had been ordered to pay a mere $50,000 in “blood money” to the murdered child’s mother after having served a very lenient jail sentence.

Lama Al Ghamdi was only five-years-old when she was brought to a hospital on December 25, 2011 with horrific injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs, a broken left arm, extensive bruising and burns.

She died last October 22, 2012.

Randa Al Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said her back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere”.

According to Lama’s mother, hospital staff told her that her “child’s rectum had been torn open and the abuser had attempted to burn it closed.”

The father, Fayhan Al Gamdi, who is also a Islamic preacher and regular guest on Muslim TV networks, confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries to his daughter. When asked how he could do this to his own daughter al-Ghamdi said that he beat her after he began to doubt her virginity. He then brought her to be checked by medics who determined that the young girl had been raped repeatedly threw out her short life.

Lama’s mother, who is divorced from the father, continues to campaign to have her former husband executed, arguing that it is the proper Islamic punishment for his crime. However, al-Ghamdi has a reputation in the kingdom due to his frequent appearances on Muslim television networks, where he considers himself to be an expert of religious law and practices.

Reports have stated that the judge overseeing his case had ruled the prosecution could only seek “blood money and the time the father had served in jail would suffice” (blood money is still considered part of “Islamic Law.”)

This news quickly spread and angered many Saudis and others around the world.

The Justice Ministry quickly intervened, stressing that al-Ghamdi was still in custody.

In the mean time, anger over Lama’s brutal death has since turned to outrage over the possible release of her killer. Lama’s mother is planning to testify against her ex-husband in an attempt t push for a stricter punishment.

Baby killed after her mother’s boyfriend shook, slapped, kicked and forcefully threw the child onto his bed where she bounced over four feet onto the floor

Article published by Dailymail.co.uk (also known as MailOnline) on 01/25/13 — Tragic 9-month-old girl is ‘beaten to death’ by her mother’s boyfriend in senseless fit of rage

A 23-year-old man stands accused of beating to death his girlfriend’s 9-month-old baby girl.

The infant, identified as Ariel Eluziario, was first taken to a hospital in New Bedford, Massachusetts at 6pm Thursday and then flown via helicopter to a children’s hospital in Providence, Rhode Island where she was pronounced dead around 10pm.

Last Christmas: Ariel Eluziario celebrated her first and only Christmas in 2012. She was brutally beaten and later died allegedly at the hands of her mother's 23-year-old boyfriend Ethen Harrison
Ariel Eluziario celebrated her first and only Christmas in 2012. She was brutally beaten and later died allegedly at the hands of her mother’s 23-year-old boyfriend Ethen Harrison

Though the girl’s mother has not been identified, Mail Online was able to obtain photos of the tragically slain little girl through the accused killer’s public Facebook profile.

Ethen Harrison of New Bedford was arraigned in district court today on charges of reckless endangerment of a child, assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

He is currently being held without bail.

Harrison’s Facebook profile, which lists his occupation as ‘F*** That Sh**!!!!,’ also lists him as ‘In a Relationship’ with Amanda Eluziario.

Photos of the young couple together, the adorable little girl, and of both Harrison and Eluziario with the little girl remain on Eluziario’s profile.

So cold: Ethen Harrison, right, admitted to police he slapped, shook and dropped Arial Eluziario four feet off a bed. The 9-month-old girl was pronounced dead Jan. 24

Harrison admitted to police he slapped, shook and dropped Ariel Eluziario four feet off a bed. The 9-month-old girl was pronounced dead Jan. 24, 2013

Much of the photo section of Amanda Eluzario’s profile is dedicated to shots of the smiling little Ariel Lillian.
In one particularly jarring photo, Harrison looks down at the baby, sneering as she cries helplessly.

Brutally slain: As part of their move to revoke accused baby killer Ethen Harrison's bail, prosecutors in the case said Ariel Eluziario suffered 'subdural hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhaging, a blot clot in the brain and other signs of severe abuse'

As part of their move to revoke accused baby killer Ethen Harrison’s bail, prosecutors in the case said Ariel Eluziario suffered ‘subdural hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhaging, a blot clot in the brain and other signs of severe abuse’

Harrison, who was not Ariel’s father, was the only person with the baby at the time of the incident.

He was out on bail for unrelated pending charges including larceny and threats to commit a crime at the time of the slaying.
Harrison’s own father has held a restraining order against his son since June.

‘He is out of control,’ the father, Francis Harrison, attested in court documents. ‘When he mad he breaks things, windows, doors. Whatever he gets his hands on. He hurts himself. He carries knives.’

It is unclear if the weapon referred to in the charges against Harrison is a knife. Also unclear is the exact nature of all the injuries that led to Ariel Eluziario’s extremely untimely death.

Though police descriptions of her tragic end are vague, prosecutors submitted the child’s ‘subdural hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhaging, a blot clot in the brain and other signs of severe abuse’ as reasons the judge should revoke Harrison’s bail.

Harrison admitted during police questioning that he’d dropped Ariel onto the floor, forcefully picked her back up, threw her onto the bed and caused her to bounce four feet back down onto the floor. He also admitted to shaking and slapping the child.

A toddler was murdered at this home in Oldonda village in eastern Siberia by her uncle

A man chopped up his 18-month-old niece then roasted her body parts in an oven, police said today.

Andrey Gadzhiev, the child’s 34-year-old uncle, was drunk when he was left in the care of the toddler for fifteen minutes while his sister, 29-year-old Elena Titova, went to visit a neighbour.  When she returned there was no sign of the child and her intoxicated brother could not explain what had happened to her. The child’s mother came home shortly after and went to search for the girl before noticing  an odd smell coming from the stove. When she opened it, the horrified mother discovered her 18-month-old toddler’s roasted remains.

Andrey Gadzhiev (pictured under the blanket) would later tell police the little girl died when he “pushed her and she fell on floor”.

According to police, Andrey Gadzhiev  ‘showed no emotion when he admitted to killing the child, chopping her in pieces and placing her in the hot oven. He also had no explanation as to why he pushed the toddler but told police he panicked and “hid the child in the oven”.

I was trying to hide her body so I put her in the oven,’ Gadzhiev said.

According to police, the mother searched the house in Oldonda village in eastern Siberia, but then noticed a strange smell from the stove. Opening the hot oven, she discovered the burnt remains her toddler daughters body. The horrified mother then noticed a fragment of the child’s leg near the sink in the kitchen.

Very few details aside from the horrific description already told by Siberian police.

The Worst Case of Child Abuse In US History – The Murder of Baby Brianna (GRAPHIC)

brianna_lopez

Brianna Mariah Lopez a.k.a “Baby Brianna” (February 14, 2002 – July 19, 2002)

Brianna Lopez who is also known to many as “Baby Brianna”, was a baby girl who was born in a New Mexico hospital on Valentines Day, 2002 to her mother, Stephanie Lopez and her father, Andy Walters. She would have turned eleven years old on February 14, 2013 but sadly, she never made it.

When Baby Brianna left the hospital after her birth she moved into a home in Las Cruces, N.M. shared by her parents and Uncle, Steven Lopez.

The abuse started almost immediately. Instead of hugs and kisses Brianna received slaps and pinches. She was tormented on a daily basis, both verbally and physically. Slapped, kicked, punched, pinched, thrown, raped, etc. You name it this infant endured it.

Mugshot photos of Brianna’s parents, Andrew “Andy” Walters and Stephanie Lopez

Mugshot photo of Steven Lopez

When Brianna would cry at the pain that was inflicted on her, her abusers would laugh and stuff her mouth with clothing to muffle her screams. Her own mother would bite and pinch her when she got frustrated by the crying, but for the most part it was the infant’s father and uncle who tormented her while Stephanie sat back and ignored her daughter’s cries.

Medical examiners would later report the marks as being both old and new which proved prolong abuse. Brianna also had bleeding on her brain, both old and new, as well as broken ribs, broken legs, broken arms, lacerations to her fingers, vagina and anus. She had been abused everyday of her short life.

Photo of Baby Brianna’s little hand and fingers

Photos of Baby Brianna taken right before her autopsy. Notice the bite marks on her head and back.

Baby Brianna was what many would consider a strong baby because she managed to survive 153 days despite coming into this cruel world weighing only several pounds.

On the evening of July 18th, 2002 Andy went out to purchase beer and when he came home they all proceeded to get drunk. Stephanie claimed to have had only a few beers before heading to bed in the same room the others were in. During this time both Andy and Steven decided to play their own sick, demented game where they would toss Brianna up in the air, let her hit the ceiling and watch her tumble to the ground. They would later tell authorities that Brianna was screaming and wailing when this was happening. Apparently the baby’s mother didn’t hear her daughter screaming and crying in agony.

Early the next morning on July 19, 2002 at approximately 7:15a.m. Stephanie awoke to Brianna crying and noticed fresh bruises on her and asked the others what happened. They told her that they may have been “a little to rough with her last night”. She accepted their answer and ignored her child’s injuries.

That same morning Stephanie noticed Brianna needed a diaper change and Andy volunteered to do it.  During the diaper change he wrapped a baby wipe around his finger and inserted it into Brianna’s anus. He also sodomized her with foreign objects. When Stephanie noticed Brianna near death she ignored it and decided to wait several hours before calling an ambulance. When she did find the time to call them, she lied and told them her daughter had fallen from her high chair. Apparently she was delusional enough to think authorities would by that story.

Brianna was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 11:10AM. She was just 5 months and 5 days old.

Left: Large bite mark on Brianna’s arm Right: More photos showing the abuse this precious baby endured

M

This photo shows the back of Brianna’s head where you can see a large bite mark to her earlobe.

The first officer to see baby Brianna in the hospital was Detective Lindell Wright. He remembers one thought going through his mind:  “I’ve got a lot to do.”

“Literally bruised from head to toe, from the top of her head all throughout her body all the way to the big toe on her right foot.” said Governor Susana Martinez who prosecuted Brianna’s family.

They took sadistic joy out of torturing this infant. Not one family member cared about her, not one of them attempted to protect her and there’s zero proof to suggest she was ever shown love in her short life. She was there for their own sadistic amusement.

When police searched the home they couldn’t find one toy or even a photo of Brianna laughing or smiling.  No evidence to indicate she enjoyed one moment of her life.

Many relatives including Brianna’s grandparents knew what was occurring but ignored it. They knew their granddaughter was being raped by both her father and uncle, they knew she had pinch marks from head to toe in different stages of healing, they knew she was being tormented and had marks, cuts and lacerations but they turned a blind eye and let it continue for five, going on six more months until baby Brianna’s little body couldn’t handle the abuse any longer.

Officer Wright has seen alot during his career but Brianna’s case will haunt him for life.

“I cried my eyes out. It will stay with me for the rest of my life. It tests you to the point you’re not sure you can speak,””You’re afraid that the emotion will take over.” said Wright.

At the time Brianna was murdered a person who committed intentional child abuse resulting in death faced a maximum of 18 years in prison.

“Eighteen years for the life of a child?” State Sen. Mary Jane Garcia of Doña Ana said. “I thought it was absurd.”

It took three years of trying and in 2005, Senate Bill 166, also known as the “Baby Brianna Bill” was officially signed into law by Governor Bill Richardson. The bill made child abuse, which results in death, a first degree felony in New Mexico and set the mandatory minimum sentence at 30 years in prison.

Three relatives, including her grandparents, were sentenced to 30 days in jail for failing to report the abuse. The maximum is one year.

Stephanie Lopez was convicted of negligent child abuse after she failed to do anything to help her child.  The New Mexico Corrections Department said that she could be released as early as September 28, 2016. Less than 15 for her daughter’s torture death. The New Mexico State Parole Board said that it’s almost certain that she’ll be released, provided that she finds a suitable home and can meet the requirements of her release conditions.

The public was outraged when they heard about the possible release. Dozens created petitions which quickly gained signatures and many called the Governor.

brianna_lopez_gravesite

Thousands of people in the community weeped over Brianna’s horrific death. Mourners who never had the chance to meet Brianna in life came together for the baby girl in her after-life. They paid for her casket and burial and claimed her body when nobody else did. Her gravesite became a memorial site with dozens of toys and flowers, something Brianna’s family didn’t approve of.

Brianna’s family and relatives didn’t put a penny towards the child’s funeral, burial and grave-stone. Heck, they didn’t even claim her, the community did. Her family didn’t want Brianna to receive love even after her death and went out of their way to purchase a cage to go over her gravestone in an attempt to shield her. The cage is a mess, unkempt and full of trash.

The community refused to let Brianna and her story simmer and still placed flowers around the cage. They’ve also created another memorial site to visit and remember the little girl who never had a chance.

When asked why they put a cage over Brianna’s grave-site, Brianna’s family had little to say.

“They were asked, and they said they just wanted to be left alone and they wanted Brianna to be left alone,” Martinez said.

Inside the cage is a cherub with a finger raised to her lips. Some believe it’s a message.

“My first thought was, ‘Let’s not talk about what’s occurred here,'” Lopez said.

The community vows to not let that happen.  People still visit and leave flowers and have built another marker as well.  Brianna’s story has been told dozens of times and is still being told over a decade later on websites and online memorials including  Brianna Lopez Last Memories and Facebook memorials such as In Loving Memory of Baby Brianna

Detectives, social workers and prosecutors who worked on her case will also remember Brianna.

“Before they started the autopsy and her little face was lying on a white sheet and I thought she looks asleep,” Wright said. “So I just took the picture.”

The picture was photo-shopped to edit out all the marks, bruises and scars she had.  It’s the Brianna the community likes to remember.

“There’s a photograph of her to carry on of her little life,” Wright said.

The picture hangs on the wall next to Susana Martinez’s desk.

“It’s a reminder, of course, of why we do what we do,” Martinez said. “If you forget you’ll either become calloused or you will become Jell-O. “You can’t do this job well unless you are in the middle, and that’s just a good reminder why we do it.”

Brianna is never far from the detective either. “It drives me to work harder to prevent, to be a voice for every child of abuse,” Wright said. “That’s what it does.”

The burning death of Kristen Salem

Kristen Salem

Kristen Salem
Mesa, Arizona, USA

Shawn-Grell

Kristen Salem was a two-year-old toddler who attended daycare in Mesa, AZ when she had her life cruelty taken from her.

On the afternoon of December 2, 1999, Shawn Ryan Grell, the 24-year-old father of Kristen, drove to the daycare she attended and signed her out early. He had written Amber Salem, the little girl’s mothers name, on the sign-out sheet and they drove off. He would later claim he signed her out early to take her for a drive to look at Christmas lights.

Kristen became fussy and started crying for her mother, which angered Grell. She tired herself out and dozed off to sleep and during this time, Grell drove to a gas station and purchased a gas can and filled it with gas at the station. He then drove his sleeping daughter to Meriden and Adobe Roads, which is a desert east of Mesa, and placed her in a ditch and poured the gasoline on her and lit her with a match. She immediately became engulfed in flames. Grell watched as his distressed toddler staggered around on fire and fell to the ground, burning to death.

The flames were reported to have been so hot, that Kristen’s hair-barrette melted down her face.

The abuse and murder of baby Alissa

Alissa GuernseyAlissa Guernsey was born on November 2, 2007 in Columbia City, Indiana and was the youngest of three siblings. She was a happy baby girl who had just celebrated her first birthday in November of 2008. Sadly, that same month her father,  Michael Guernsey, was killed in a fatal car accident.

Alissa’s mother, Kelli Sprunger, was devastated at the loss. She had a history of drug dependency and depression and felt the death of her children’s father was too much to handle and that she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to properly care for her three kids so her cousin, Christy Shaffer,  volunteered to “care” for them while she got back on her feet.

But Sprunger didn’t get back on her feet, instead, she fell deeper into depression which caused her drug addiction to spiral out of control. She was also barely keeping in touch with DCYF/caseworkers. She was thankful that Christy volunteered to help watch over her kids when she could not.

kelli_s_baby_alissa_mother

Photo of Kelli Sprunger with a small heart-shaped photo of her daughter, Alissa, in the corner

Alissa and her brothers were placed into state custody in Steuben County, IN. Shortly after, they were placed under the care of Matt and Christy Shaffer in Topeka, La Grange County, IN.

The Shaffer’s were not properly screened to see if they qualified as guardians but because they were relatives, DCYF figured that would suffice.

Prior to being placed with her aunt, Alissa Guernsey looked like your typical happy, healthy, bubbly baby girl. She was getting on her feet and all it took was a smile to get her to smile back. She was entering the early toddler stages of her life and like any young child, she loved exploring and playing with her brothers. But in the weeks ahead she would change to a completely different child. She would look battered, scared and withdrawn.

Baby-Alissa

Alissa’s appearance before and after being placed in Christy Shaffer’s (far right) care

Shaffer immediately singled out Alissa, which was most likely due to her age and the fact that she was the most defenceless of the three children. Alissa had just celebrated her first birthday and being just one, she wasn’t able to speak and Shaffer liked the idea of having her own silent punching bag.

Alissa was harassed and yelled at on a daily basis. She was pushed if she wasn’t moving fast enough, shoved if she was in the way, pinched just for the mere heck of it, kicked, slapped, etc. You name it this little girl endured it.

Alissa had cigarettes placed out on her multiple times but one of Shaffer’s favorite things to do was grab her by her hair and smash her little head against anything that was convenient and if there wasn’t anything convenient she would use the floor. By January 2009 her hair had bald spots due to being ripped out and she had bruises from head to toe, each in different stages of healing which help authorities later determine that the little girl was tormented over a long period of time.

Shaffer was extra callous and manipulating. To avoid detection she started taking  Alissa to doctors to try to find some type diagnoses, telling the doctors that she bruised easily and that her hair was falling out. She had been to specialists in Elkhart and Riley’s Children Hospital, none of which could ever find anything medically wrong with her after multiple rounds of blood testing.

During this time Christy Shaffer kept Alissa’s mother from visiting with her, but not with her other two children. She always made excuses, telling the mother that Alissa was sick or sleeping.

Staffer wanted people to believe that Alissa had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or was born a meth/crack addicted baby and that was the reason she was “clumsy and always bruised” – According to the doctor and tox screen reports. Alissa was perfectly healthy. You can clearly see the before and after pictures of Alissa, she was perfectly happy and healthy with her mother, and turned in to a different baby with Christy Shaffer.

Alissa’s little body put up a fight for three long torturous months until one day she finally succumbed to the brutality that was unleashed upon her by her own aunt.

On March 28, 2009, Shaffer was driving, Alissa was in her car-seat behind her. There were other children in the vehicle including Alissa’s two brothers. Sometime during that car ride Christy became frustrated and angry with Alissa and started beating her and grabbing the screaming baby by her hair, banging her head multiple times against the car seat hard enough to cause fatal injuries. After multiple wacks she started losing consciousness. She was beaten into a coma.

Her lifeless body was strapped back into her car seat as Shaffer casually proceeded to go rent a movie, then drive to a nearby McDonald’s drive-thru to order happy meals for the rest of the children, including Alissa’s two brothers who had just witnessed their baby sister’s murder. Christy then proceeded to drive to her house, paying no attention to her nieces lifeless, stiff body.

When she arrived to her house in Topeka she let all the children out of the vehicle and got them situated in the house. She then went back to get Alissa’s body. During this time-frame she never once called an ambulance but did decide to call her brother several hours after the vicious attack.

Her brother was an EMT so he had some knowledge about what to do. He rushed to the house and noticed immediately that Alissa was cold to the touch, unresponsive with no heartbeat. He contacted 911 and performed CPR until emergency crew got there.

Alissa was then rushed to the hospital where a team of doctors desperately tried to save the little girl for 45 minutes. Despite their hardest efforts baby Alissa was pronounced dead on March 28, 2009 at 9:54p.m. She was fifteen months old.

Alissa Guernsey

An autopsy declared her death a HOMICIDE.

Two medical examiners concluded that Alissa had been deceased hours before arriving to the emergency room. They went on to say that her injuries prior to her death could have only been caused by a prolonged pattern of abuse. She was covered in bruises, marks and lacerations. Her internal injuries were just as horrific as her external injuries. Most of the marks were focused on her little head. Her arm was broken which meant this little child was in agonizing pain prior to her death. The insides of her mouth gouged into two open sores.

Christy Shaffer was arrested but never charged with her murder. Instead, she was only convicted of a singular count of a Class B Felony and neglect of a dependent. Her sentence? 77 days in jail.

The sentence outraged thousands of people in the community. Even to this day people are petitioning and creating memorial pages on numerous social media websites. The community surrounded the streets with picket signs similar to the one below. The “justice” system has not brought justice to Alissa Guernsey but the community has, and they’ve come together to make sure Alissa’s death doesn’t go down in vain.

There are many photos on Baby Cries 4 Justice including this one. The admin of the page wrote under the following saying;

This is a quote made by Judge Vanderbeck in the article in the South Bend Tribune “Was the Judge to Lenient” by Virginia Black… Photo Courtesy of Google Images***

“I’m not tipping my hand and suggesting that I know what I’m doing yet as to the ultimate resolution, I’m just — you don’t get faced with stuff like this and these people are being nice and if you take their side, and something tragic would happen with a child and a ticking time bomb — ah — that doesn’t make them bad, it kind of just makes them at the wrong place at the wrong time,” VanDerbeck said at one point, according to the transcript.

Alissa’s Army wants to know Judge Vanderbeck, How can you be so HEARTLESS?? Calling Alissa a “ticking time bomb”?? Alissa was PERFECTLY HEALTHY when she was placed in Christy’s care!!! There was NO MEDICAL REASON for any of her injuries and bruising!! This is documented by health professionals!!! How can you say Christy was in the wrong place at the wrong time??? SHE DID THIS!! How can you DEFEND a child KILLER?? YOU sir, have it backwards!! Alissa was in the wrong place at the wrong time and Christy was the TICKING TIME BOMB!!! I see a BIG CONFLICT OF INTEREST! YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RIGHT!! Christy should be CHARGED ACCORDINGLY!! WE ARE NOT BACKING DOWN!!! This one statement is the reason the world is OUTRAGED!! JUSTICE FOR ALISSA!!!

UPDATE: ALISSA’S PETITION on Whitehouse.Gov ended on January 14, 2013 and achieved its goal of going over 25,0000 signatures. (26, 892 to be exact) — Thank you to everyone who took the time to sign the petition, which can now be sent to the Obama Administration.

Nguyen Thi Xuan Lan (pictured) was a nine-month-old Vietnamese-Taiwanese girl who suffered horrific abuse from her mother and step-father in the southern province of Dong Thap. She was slapped, burned,  beaten and covered in scorch marks as well as three deep wounds to her left thigh and in the soles of her feet which, doctors said, have been caused by hot objects applied to the skin.

On September 16, 2010, following a tip-off from a neighbor, a health officer in Long Hau commune Lai Vung District found Nhu Y covered in bruises and wounds from head to toe.

The neighbor along with witnesses said they heard the baby crying and the mother screaming and cursing. Prior to that they didn’t know about the abuse, as the girl was kept inside the house at all times.

According to doctors from the Dong Thap General Hospital, Nhu Y had bruises and wounds all over her legs and feet and all across his little body. They concluded that she suffered a 25% permanent injury.

The police would later find out that she was beaten and tortured by her own mother,  Nguyen Thi Xuan Lan, and 34-year-old stepfather, Le Thanh Tam. The couple not only took turns beating Nhu Y, but her step-father even video taped the gruesome footage.

When Nhu Y was being hospitalized, the mother was permitted to enter the hospital to care for her. However, Lan was not interested, so she was separated from the child. It took police no time at all to realize who was guilty.

The mother and step-father were brought in for questioning and it didn’t take long to get the both of them to confess.  They told police they beat the baby girl because she often cried and they believed she was a source of bad luck for the family. They believed that hitting her would drive misfortune away.

The child’s step-father, Tam, was the first to claim she was possessed by demons and told Xuan Lan that she (the baby) had to be ‘treated’ by him. Xuan Lan agreed and on August 14, 2010, Tam used his chin to press hard into Y’s two cheeks while his hands squeezed tight onto his step daughter’s mouth and face. This particular incident was being taped.

Both the mother and her husband (Nguyen’s step-father) were arrested. Area police have prosecuted her for abusing her baby.

According to reports, the neighbor who alerted police, was the same neighbor who took custody of the child while her mother was being sentenced. The aunt took custody shortly after.
