Bizarre Love Triangle With A Surprising Ending

Brian Barrett

On Friday, September 15, 2006, just outside Buffalo, N.Y., Brian Barrett’s shift at the Dynabrade power tool plant ended at 10 p.m. He climbed into his truck to head home, but before he could slip his key into the ignition, someone shot him at close range with a .30-caliber rifle. Three bullets passed through his driver’s side window, hitting him in the arm and neck.

He died almost instantly, but it would be two days before a coworker would notice his body still in the truck in the parking lot on Monday morning.

Erie County Sheriff’s deputies dispatched to the scene at 8989 Sheridan Drive in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence talked to locals. They reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man wearing camouflage and a ski mask. Near Barrett’s truck officers found a peach pit and a leather cartridge case covered with what was later determined to be dog hair.

Once the investigators talked to a few coworkers at the factory where Barrett had been working part-time for the last four years, the outline of a likely scenario quickly came into focus. The 22-year-old seemed to have become the victim of a bizarre love triangle: He was likely killed by a man pretending to be someone he was not, obsessed with a woman pretending to be someone she was not.

And almost all of it, until the bloody final act, had happened online.

Daniel Barrett still does not understand how his son ended up a victim. The death of young Brian Barrett certainly shocked his family and friends.

Barrett had been a good kid and a star athlete. He had been on the football team too, but baseball was his game. The former third baseman still holds his high school’s record for the longest home run. His old coach, Starpoint High School Athletic Director Tom Sarkovics, says he never heard anyone say a negative word about the guy.

After high school, Barrett played ball in the Midget League and was voted Most Valuable Player. But by then it was just a game for him: He went to work at a machine shop as soon as he graduated in June 2002. He saved up enough money to buy his Ford Ranger, but then in December he was laid off.

That disappointment prompted him to reconsider college. He enrolled at Erie Community College, and found a job at Dynabrade at the same time. Once he got his two-year associate degree, he transferred to Buffalo State College, where he was studying to become an industrial arts teacher at the time of his murder.

His life was just starting. Barrett still lived with his parents, Dan and Deb Barrett, on Minnick Road in nearby Lockport, in the childhood room decorated with his sports trophies, posters and photos of him with his younger brothers, Daniel and Richard.

His grandfather, Harry Barrett called him Lurch. Barrett was tall and strong, but shy, just finding his footing in the world. He’d started camping and traveling, seeing a little of the world outside the Buffalo area. Earlier in 2006, he’d gone to North Carolina on a camping trip. While there, he tried sky diving for the first time, he told his parents about this only after the jump, afraid that they’d worry about him if they knew.

But it turned out that the mortal danger would come from one of Barrett’s coworkers, Thomas Montgomery.

“Tommy” Montgomery was an 18-year-old Marine about to be deployed to Iraq. He described himself online as 6’2, 180 pounds. He said he had a black belt in karate and that he already sported an array of battle scars.

He met a 17-year-old girl from West Virginia, Jessi, on the game site Pogo.com in the spring of 2005. He told her his mom had died of cancer when he was twelve. She sympathized, and he opened up. He had raped a cheerleader in high school, he said, but then had turned himself around and followed his dad, Tommy Sr., into the Marines.

Tommy and Jessi spent more and more time chatting online on Pogo, MySpace and Yahoo. They even scheduled 10-minute phone conversations each day, before and after Tommy’s military duties. When Tommy was in Iraq, his father passed messages and photos between the two, through his Marine contacts.

Tommy got jealous when he started suspecting that Jessi was sending her photos to other men online too. To make it up to him, she sent him one of her thongs and a silver chain. Tommy calmed down and forgave herbut Tommy Sr. stepped in and sternly warned her not to hurt his sensitive, inexperienced son.

Still, he kept relaying their messages. When Tommy considered suicide in Iraq, Jessi kept him going. He said she was the best thing that ever happened to him. She sent him some custom-made dogtags. He tattooed her name on his arm.

And on Christmas Day, 2005, Tommy asked Jessi to marry him. She said yes. They’d never even met.

If they had, Jessi and Tommy would both have realized that nearly everything that they had told each other was a lie.

ITALY POLICE: U.S. student ‘stabbed 25 times in his sleep by roommate’ while on drugs – five years to the day since Amanda Knox scandal

Pictured; Suspect Alexander Schepis Reid is arrested then taken into custody after stabbing his college roommate as the victim was sleeping.

Updated: 11/03/12 at 10:45 a.m. ET: ROME, ITALY —

A 19-year-old American was in critical condition Friday after he was allegedly stabbed while he slept by a fellow student following a night of partying in the Italian capital, officials told NBC News.

The victim, New Jersey-born Fabio Malpeso underwent surgery for stab wounds to his lungs and other parts of his body. Police said Friday that Malpeso was in critical but stable condition in intensive care at a hospital in Rome.

Authorities said the motive for the attack, which happened in an apartment that overlooks Rome’s famous Colosseum early Thursday morning, was unclear. However, detectives suspect “drug- and alcohol-related delirium” might be a factor.

The alleged assailant, who was taken to a police station and then a prison in central Rome, was named in a police document as Alexander Schepis Reid, 20. The suspect and victim are both students at John Cabot University, an American college in Rome.

Police said Reid, a resident of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy, appeared to have joint U.S. and Italian citizenship, but they were working to establish his nationalities.

Lawyer: Suspect a ‘model student’
Reid’s lawyer, Vincenzo Comi, said his client was “distraught and exhausted,” after visiting the young man in jail Friday.

“He is clearly under shock, and nothing in his past could have prepared him for this. He has never had any problems with the law and has always been a model student with top grades,” Comi said, adding he did not want to say what Reid had told him at this stage.

Comi said Reid’s mother was American and his father Italian, and as far as he was aware Reid had dual citizenship.

A third man, an Italian aged in his 30s named Andrea Rinaldi, suffered injuries to his arms and hands trying to defend Malpeso, and was also in the hospital, police said.

Paolo Guiso, a judiciary police inspector who is leading the investigation, told NBC News Friday that Reid, Malpeso, Malpeso’s sister Federica and her boyfriend, Rinaldi, had returned to the apartment after partying in a nightclub Wednesday night and early Thursday.

The building where Reid is alleged to have stabbed Malpeso is not far from the Coliseum in central Rome.

Malpeso had drunk alcohol, while Reid, Federica and Rinaldi had consumed “alcohol, hashish and ecstasy,” Guiso said, explaining that all four had been tested for drugs and alcohol.

“Federica, Rinaldi and Fabio went to bed at 6 a.m. [Thursday]. Reid stayed in the living room. At a certain point, he went to the kitchen, fetched a knife and went into Fabio’s room, where he started to stab the sleeping youth,” Guiso alleged.

“Hearing the screaming and commotion, Rinaldi and the victim’s sister ran in to see what was happening. They stepped in to defend Fabio, which resulted in Rinaldi suffering cuts to his hands and arms,” he said.

“The motive of the attack is still not clear. At present we … believe that the violence was brought on due to a drug- and alcohol-related delirium,” Guiso added.

‘Best friends’
Guiso said early Friday that he had not been able to speak properly with Reid as he was “still half asleep and at times catatonic …  he was almost in a state of unconsciousness at times.”

“We have taken him to Regina Coeli prison in the heart of Rome. Within 48 hours from the arrest, he will have to go before the judge who will need to confirm his arrest,” he added.

Marta Canigiulia, 20, a student at John Cabot, told NBC News Friday that she was friends with Reid and Malpeso, though she had only recently met the latter.

“They were best friends … they are best friends, I hope they still are,” she added. “I loved them for the fact that they were always very cheery. They would always come up to you and say: ‘Hi Marta, what’s up?’ They were always smiling.”

Referring to Reid, Canigiulia said with tears in her eyes, “he is a good person.”

“I can’t explain why this happened. Probably it’s because of drugs,” she speculated.

Geraldine Gully, 18, another student, said she did not know Reid and Malpeso personally but “saw them all the time at school. … They seemed like very good friends. I was so shocked to hear what had happened because it was so unexpected and you wouldn’t believe it,” she said.

In a statement, John Cabot University President France Pavoncello said he was dealing “with this situation personally” with support from other staff and was in touch with the “involved parties and their families.”

He confirmed the suspect and victim were students at the university, saying they were roommates in an off-campus apartment.

“I trust you will all join me in sending our prayers to the victim’s family for their son’s full recovery as well as to the family of the alleged attacker, who is likely shattered by this tragic event,” he added.

Thursday was the fifth anniversary of the brutal murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, that led to the arrest, trial and eventual acquittal of American student Amanda Knox.

Man Strangles Fiancee’s Daughter, 24, After Fantasizing About Having Sex With Her DEAD Body Then Helped Her Son, 3, Get Ready For Halloween

11/02/12 MICHIGAN — A pastor accused of beating and strangling a neighbor to fulfill a sexual fantasy was engaged to the victim’s mother and had asked church members to pray for the young woman before police found her body, a friend said on Friday.

Ex-convict John D. White, from Michigan, told investigators that after killing 24-year-old Rebekah Gay in her trailer in rural Isabella County early on Wednesday, he hid her body in nearby woods then returned to the trailer to dress her three-year-old son in a Halloween costume, ready for the boy’s father to pick him up.

White told investigators he repeatedly struck Gay’s head with a mallet then strangled her with a zip tie, according to the Isabella County sheriff’s office.

He said he stripped her but does not remember if he carried out his fantasy of having sex with Gay’s dead body.

‘We are all absolutely floored,’ said Donna Houghton, 76, who had a role in hiring White to be pastor at the 14-member Christ Community Fellowship three years ago.

She said she protested his innocence until she heard he had confessed.

‘Then he had no leg to stand on,’ she told The Associated Press.

White led investigators to Gay’s body in a wooded area a half-mile away from the trailer park and later Wednesday was charged with first-degree murder. He remained jailed without bond on Friday.

Gay and White lived in the same trailer park in Broomfield Township, 85 miles northwest of Lansing, and White was engaged to Gay’s mother who was a regular at his Sunday sermons, Houghton said. She said the pastor often watched Gay’s son while she was at work.

White ‘really liked this young man,’ Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said.

Houghton said that before White was arrested he had called her to ask that she contact other church members and start a prayer chain for Gay, who was still missing at the time.

‘He was pretty shook up. He said the police were giving him a hard time,’ Houghton said.

She said the tiny congregation was aware of White’s criminal past when he joined the church.

He was released from prison in 2007 after serving nearly 12 years for manslaughter in the death of a 26-year-old woman in Kalamazoo County, according to the state Corrections Department.

White also was sentenced to probation for choking and stabbing a 17-year-old Battle Creek girl in 1981.

‘He was absolutely contrite,’ Houghton said. ‘All kinds of people turn around and meet the Lord and they are a different person.

‘He was doing a lot of good in the community… He was doing a lot of good and Satan did not want him doing good, and Satan got to him.’
