The burning death of Robbie Middleton

Robbie Middleton was a child from Montgomery County, Texas. It was 1998 and he was excited about his upcoming 8th birthday. Sadly, that same day as he left his Splendora home he was forced into a wooded area, tied to a tree, sexually assaulted and tortured. His attacker then doused him with gasoline and set him alight.

Robbie lived when the flames stopped, but by this point he was left with blackened skin, burned-off eyelids, and third degree burns on 99 percent of his body. He was non-recognizable and spent the remainder of his life in a specialist unit at Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston, TX.

His rehabilitation included over 200 operations and skin grafts, was excruciating and he cried every minute of it but his mother said he never gave in to self-pity and anger.

The surgeons described how during the first few months at Shriners, the little boy suffered nightmares and would wake up screaming in terror, convinced that he was being burned again.

In 2011,  after thirteen years of terrible suffering, Robbie’s premature death was to have one positive outcome.

In a harrowing 17-minute video (although some reports claim it was a 27 minute interview) made just before he finally succumbed to his wounds, Robbie, then 20, named his childhood neighbor Don Wilburn  Collins then 13, and a known trouble maker, as the person he believed was responsible for torching him. He also said that two weeks prior to his birthday attack, Collins had raped him.

Collins already had a history and a bad reputation. In 2001 he was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of an 8-year-old child. This case is not related to Robbie’s case. He was sent to prison but released shortly after. He was then sent back to prison for failure to register as a sex offender however, he was released again on September 5, 2011.

Collins was never charged with Robbie’s sexual assault and murder which caused outrage among the community.

Robbie succumbed to his injuries on April 29, 2011 from a type of cancer which can only occur as a result of complications from skin grafts for third-degree burns. He was twenty years old.

In a 2011 interview, Bill Pattillo, who was the prosecutor of the case spoke only to KHOU 11 News about why he let the case go.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s detectives interviewed Middleton at Shriners Hospital in Galveston and later at the Middleton’s home.

“Both times we got nothing that mentioned Don Collins,” Pattillo said. “He mentioned other names; the names we felt like were just some of his friends.”

Pattillo said Robbie gave five or six different suspects.

“That statement was patently impossible, but he was under trauma, in shock,” Pattillo said.

Robbie was also heavily sedated and had to be interviewed in between doses of pain medication. Investigators discounted that interview.

To family, the media, and in a deposition made just days before he died Robbie repeated the same thing.

“Don grabbed me and turned me around and threw gas in my face,” Robbie said.

But Pattillo said Robbie named other potential suspects to authorities.

He said he had not made that statement before in 13 years “because it could injure the case.”

If the case had gone forward prosecutors would have been duty bound to share that potentially damaging information with the defense.

11 News also asked about a confession 13-year-old Collins had reportedly made while in custody.

“He did” Pattillo acknowledged, but added “there were problems with it.”

Pattillo’s philosophy was that it was “better to let him go and get him in the future, than try him and lose it.”

“He (Collins) pulled down my pants and started raping me,” Robbie said. He said the sexual assault occurred about two weeks before he was set on fire and in the same wooded area.

“It’s tragic that statement didn’t come out in 13 years,” Pattillo said.

In a civil lawsuit against Collins held in December 2011 a Texas jury awarded the Middleton family $150 billion. One of the biggest settlements ever awarded. The award was largely symbolic and the parents don’t expect to ever see any money. According to the Schulenberg Sticker, the family hoped the verdict would pressure the county into prosecuting Collins for murder.

Robbie Middleton’s accusations have opened the way for Collins, now a convicted sex offender, to be charged with felony murder 14 years after the incident. Murder charges were filed against him after his September 2011 release charging him as an adult rather than a juvenile.

The burning death of Kristen Salem

Kristen Salem

Kristen Salem
Mesa, Arizona, USA

Shawn-Grell

Kristen Salem was a two-year-old toddler who attended daycare in Mesa, AZ when she had her life cruelty taken from her.

On the afternoon of December 2, 1999, Shawn Ryan Grell, the 24-year-old father of Kristen, drove to the daycare she attended and signed her out early. He had written Amber Salem, the little girl’s mothers name, on the sign-out sheet and they drove off. He would later claim he signed her out early to take her for a drive to look at Christmas lights.

Kristen became fussy and started crying for her mother, which angered Grell. She tired herself out and dozed off to sleep and during this time, Grell drove to a gas station and purchased a gas can and filled it with gas at the station. He then drove his sleeping daughter to Meriden and Adobe Roads, which is a desert east of Mesa, and placed her in a ditch and poured the gasoline on her and lit her with a match. She immediately became engulfed in flames. Grell watched as his distressed toddler staggered around on fire and fell to the ground, burning to death.

The flames were reported to have been so hot, that Kristen’s hair-barrette melted down her face.

Witch Murders in the 21st Century? The torture murder of Rubiya Bibi

Despite a law in place, poor women from marginalized communities in Jharkhand continue to be branded as ‘witches’ and tortured, murdered, evening burning at the stake.

Mukesh Rajak describes the plight of Rubiya Bibi – a poor Muslim woman and a mother of 4 children from his own district who has been declared as a witch by her rich and influential villagers and brutally tortured. All the torturers were men.

The video shows how, along with the women accused of witchcraft, her children and family also are victimised and isolated from the society. The woman is also not allowed to work.

Jharkhand was one of the first Indian states, to adopt a law against witchcraft-related cruelties and crimes against women. The law – Witchcraft Prevention Act, 2001 provides for severe punishment for those who brand/torture/kill women as ‘witches’.

Ironically, the state still continues to top the list of women branded as witches. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) records state that Jharkhand has witnessed deaths of 249 persons (mostly women) between 2001 and 2008 for “practising witchcraft”. The Jharkhand Criminal Investigation Department figures maintain that as many as 1,200 witches managed to survive torture and attacks between 2001 and 2009. The figures suggest that there has been a rise in the number of attacks on women accused of being a ‘witch’.

While the attackers aim to kill the victim, some lucky ones manage to escape. Rubiya was also lucky to have survived. But her in-laws threw her out of their house. Rubiya’s husband who is mentally unstable, was unable to protect her.

Uneducated and denied work, Rubiya has no means to support herself or her children. For her father, a daily wage labourer, its extremely difficult to feed so many mouths. It’s this unjustified sufferings of Rubiya and her family that made Mukesh take up her case to report. He is especially bitter about the way Rubia’s children are ostracized, beaten and taunted every day.

During the shoot of this video Mukesh also spoke to several other victims of witchcraft like Rubia. These meetings made him realize that it is only the poor and defenceless women who are handpicked by their rich and powerful neighbours to be declared ‘witches’.

Mukesh is keenly following the case filed by Ribiya Bibi. He wants  people watching this video to create pressure on the  police of Deogarh to act on the case, so that this woman can get justice under the existing anti-witchcraft law.

44 Days Of Hell – The Murder Of Junko Furuta

44-days-of-hell November 25th, 1988 – January 4th, 1989

TOKYO, JAPAN → Born November 22nd, 1972, Junko Furuta had just celebrated her 17th birthday three days prior. The  Japanese teenager and Junior (grade 11) attended Yashio-Minami High School in Saitama Prefecture in Misato.

On November 25th, 1988, Junko left School and was walking home (although some reports say she was walking to her part-time after school job.) She never made it home.

She was kidnapped by a group of young men, including a 17-year-old who was identified as ‘Jō’ and would be later given the surname Kamisaku. They kept her captive in the house owned by the parents of Kamisaku, in the Ayase district of Adachi, Tokyo.

That was the beginning of her 44 days of torture. She didn’t know her abductors, they had no grudge against her and there was nothing specific that they were after. They attacked her because they could, embarking on weeks of atrocities because they could, and because they wanted to.

To forestall a manhunt, the kidnappers coerced Furuta into calling her mother and telling her that she had run away from home, but was with “a friend” and was not in danger. He also browbeat her into posing as one of the boys’ girlfriends when the parents of the house where she was held were around, but when it became clear that the parents didn’t care either way, he dropped this pretext.

Pictured; Far left: Junko,  three of the unidentified abductors and the home in which Junko was taken to and raped and tortured for 44-days. The same home she will eventually die alone in.

DAY 1: November 22, 1988: Kidnapped
Kept captive in house, and posed as one of boy’s girlfriend
Raped (over 400 times in total)
Forced to call her parents and tell them she had run away
Starved and malnutrition
Fed cockroaches to eat and urine to drink
Forced to masturbate
Forced to strip in front of others
Burned with cigarette lighters and set off fireworks in her ears, mouth, vagina
Foreign objects inserted into her vagina/anus including a still lit light-bulb
DAY 11: December 1, 1988: Severely beat up countless times
Face held against concrete ground and jumped on
Hands tied to ceiling and body used as a punching bag  until her damaged internal organs made blood run from her mouth
Nose filled with so much blood that she can only breath through her mouth
Dumbbells dropped onto her stomach
Vomited when tried to drink water (her stomach couldn’t accept it)
Tried to escape and punished by cigarette burning on arms
Flammable liquid poured on her feet and legs, then lit on fire
Bottle inserted into her anus, causing injury
DAY 20: December10, 1988: Unable to walk properly due to severe leg burns
Beat with bamboo sticks
Fireworks inserted into anus and lit
Hands smashed by weights and fingernails kracked
Beaten with golf club
Cigarettes inserted into vagina and forced to drink her own urine as they laughed
Beaten with iron rods repeatedly
Winter; forced outside to sleep in balcony
Skewers of grilled chicken inserted into her vagina and anus, causing bleeding.

And yet she’d almost escaped. One time she reached the telephone—but one of the boys caught her just in time and ended the call for help. They punished her by taunting her with a candle flame and finally dousing her legs in lighter fluid and set her on fire, as punishment for trying to run away. She went into convulsions; the boys would later say that they thought she was faking the seizure. They set her on fire again, then put it out. She survived this round.

DAY 30: Hot wax dripped onto face
Eyelids burned by cigarette lighter
Stabbed with sewing needles in chest area
Left nipple cut and destroyed with pliers
Hot light bulb inserted into her vagina
Heavy bleeding from vagina due to scissors insertion
Unable to urinate properly
Injuries were so severe that it took over an hour for her to crawl downstairs and use the bathroom
Eardrums severely damaged
Extreme reduced brain size
.
DAY 40: Begged her tortures to “kill her and get it over with”
January 1, 1989: Junko greets the New Years Day alone
Body mutilated
Unable to move from the ground
.
DAY 44: January 4, 1989: The four boys beat her mutilated body with an iron barbell, using a loss at the game of Mah-jongg as a pretext. She is profusely bleeding from her mouth and nose. They put a candle’s flame to her face and eyes.
Then, lighter fluid was poured onto her legs, arms, face and stomach, and then lit on fire. This final torture lasted for a time of two hours. Junko Furuta died later that day, in pain and alone. Nothing could compare 44 days of suffering she had to go through.
Less than 24-hours later, on January 5th, 1988, the killers hid Junko’s body in a 55-gallon drum, then filled it with concrete; they disposed the drum in a tract of reclaimed land in Kōtō,Tokyo.
When her mother heard the news and details of what happened to her daughter, she passed-out. She had to undergo a psychiatric outpatient treatment.
According to their statements at their trial, the four of them raped her, beat her, introduced foreign objects including an iron rod into her vagina, made her drink her own urine and was fed cockroaches, inserted fireworks into her anus, and set them off, forced Furuta to masturbate, cut her nipple with pliers, dropped dumbbells onto her stomach, and burned her with cigarettes and lighters. (One of the burnings was punishment for attempting to call the police.)At one point her injuries were so severe that according to one of the boys it took more than an hour for her to crawl downstairs to use the bathroom. They also related that “possibly a hundred different people” knew that Furuta had been imprisoned there, but it is not clear if this means they visited the house at different times while she was imprisoned there, or themselves either raped or abused her. When the boys refused to let her leave, she begged them on several occasions to “kill (her) and get it over with“.
Three of the boys identities were sealed by the court because of their age, even though they were tried as adults. They pled guilty to a reduced charge of “committing bodily injury that resulted in death”, instead of the original charge of murder. Jo Kamisaku was released in August 1999, and nearly 5 years later he was arrested and served 7 years for assualting a jealous love-rival and according to others who know him and spent time in prison with him, he had been bragging about what he had done to Furuta.

By 2004, Kamisaku, who was already released from prison for Junko’s horrific murder,  had allegedly renewed his contacts with the underworld, and was in trouble with the law again.

He was arrested for assaulting a 27-year-old acquaintance, Takatoshi Isono. Upset that a woman in his life might be involved with Isono, Kamisaku tracked the man down, beat him, shoved him in his trunk, drove him from Adachi to his mother’s bar in Misato, Furuta’s hometown, and continued to beat him. During the four-hour beating, Kamisaku allegedly threatened to kill the man, telling him that he’d killed before and knew how to get away with it.

During his trial Kamisaku admitted to the assault, but he denied that he’d referred to any previous murder or had threatened Isono.

Prosecutors wanted Kamisaku to spend another 7 years in prison. They got a conviction and the sentence they wanted.

Kamisaku has since been released again.
