Child Abuse Charges For Muslim Mother Who Burned Daughter After She Resisted Arranged Marriage

A South Florida mother who used a knife to burn her teen daughter after the girl resisted her parents’ wishes to marry her cousin in an arranged marriage is facing child abuse charges, Hollywood Police said Tuesday.

Sahar Thabit, 35, was arrested Friday and is facing three counts of child abuse on her 17-year-old daughter, according to a Hollywood Police arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the abuse began in early January when Thabit used a stove to heat up the metal on the knife and burn her daughter’s arm three times, twice on her left forearm and once on her upper right arm.

“I swear to God I didn’t see anything,” the victim’s grandfather, Ali Alomari, told NBC 6 outside the family’s home Tuesday.

The burns caused permanent disfigurement, the report noted.

A friend of the girl reported the abuse to a school administrator, who later called police, the affidavit said.

According to the friend, the teen said her parents became upset because she didn’t want to marry her cousin, but wanted to marry a boy in Yemen she had met on the Internet, the affidavit said.

The daughter later told police that she had been talking to the boy in Yemen through the Internet, even though it’s not allowed in the family’s religion.

The girl’s friend also said the parents verbally and mentally abused their daughter calling her a whore and slut, the affidavit said. The friend also said the girl had attempted suicide over the incident, the affidavit said.

When the victim’s father was questioned by detectives, he claimed she had been burned by a stove until it was pointed out that the burns were in three different areas, the affidavit said. The father then asked for an attorney, the affidavit said.

The girl’s grandfather gave the same explanation Tuesday, saying, “She burned herself in the stove.”

After interviewing witnesses and the victim, police determined Thabit had placed the knife on her daughter’s arms, the affidavit said.

Detectives weren’t able to interview Thabit because she only speaks Arabic, the affidavit said. She was arrested and later released on bond, and it’s unknown whether she has an attorney.

The girl’s father told NBC 6 over the phone that the family is going through difficult times with the allegations and said he had no comment.

Lenore Walker, a psychology professor at Nova Southeastern University, said the alleged abuse in the case is similar to an honor killing.

”The rationale is that you’re shaming your family by getting involved with a boy or a man who is unacceptable for whatever reason. In this particular case, it’s because she was promised to another man and so she talked on the Internet, not even face to face,” Walker said.

Photo of Maron Thomas, then 20, accused of murdering his whole family and beheading his niece, the youngest of the five victims

beheaded_toddlerIn January 2010, Maron Thomas, a 20-year-old Austin County man, was charged with capital murder for the murder of five family members.

On midnight, Bellville Police received a distress call to Thomas’s parents home. When they arrived they walked upon a gruesome scene. The bodies of his mother, Debra Phearse Washington, 54; stepfather George T. Washington, 69; sister Kiana Shree Phearse, 25; brother Cedric Thomas, 19; and niece Khalilah Chambers-Massey, who was Kiana Phearse’s daughter. All gunned down in cold blood. Thomas took out most of his rage on his defenceless niece who had been beheaded with a machete.

(Note: The photo shown is NOT the niece of Thomas, but another muslim child beheaded in the middle east.)

Four of the victims were found in the house. Cedric was found nude in the backyard and police believe he tried to flee but was unable to get away alive and was gunned down in a wooded area behind the home. When police discovered his body they also found  lying nearby, the murder weapon used, which was a shotgun and handgun.

Thomas then went on to burglarize a car and was arrested around 3AM after attempting to break into a house roughly one mile away from the massacre. He was reported to have been naked and neighbors were able to hold him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Sister Ka’Tara Price said her brother always had anger problems, and that he’d recently converted to Islam, but that she wasn’t aware of any mental issues. She  believes anger and Thomas’ conversion to the Muslim religion influenced his actions.

Saudi child was raped and tortured to death by her own FATHER after her doubted her virginity

Lama Al Ghamdi

Feb 16, 2013, SAUDI ARABIA — Many in the Saudi community are outraged after hearing news that a father, who had raped and tortured his child to death, had been ordered to pay a mere $50,000 in “blood money” to the murdered child’s mother after having served a very lenient jail sentence.

Lama Al Ghamdi was only five-years-old when she was brought to a hospital on December 25, 2011 with horrific injuries, including a crushed skull, broken ribs, a broken left arm, extensive bruising and burns.

She died last October 22, 2012.

Randa Al Kaleeb, a social worker from the hospital where Lama was admitted, said her back was broken and that she had been raped “everywhere”.

According to Lama’s mother, hospital staff told her that her “child’s rectum had been torn open and the abuser had attempted to burn it closed.”

The father, Fayhan Al Gamdi, who is also a Islamic preacher and regular guest on Muslim TV networks, confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries to his daughter. When asked how he could do this to his own daughter al-Ghamdi said that he beat her after he began to doubt her virginity. He then brought her to be checked by medics who determined that the young girl had been raped repeatedly threw out her short life.

Lama’s mother, who is divorced from the father, continues to campaign to have her former husband executed, arguing that it is the proper Islamic punishment for his crime. However, al-Ghamdi has a reputation in the kingdom due to his frequent appearances on Muslim television networks, where he considers himself to be an expert of religious law and practices.

Reports have stated that the judge overseeing his case had ruled the prosecution could only seek “blood money and the time the father had served in jail would suffice” (blood money is still considered part of “Islamic Law.”)

This news quickly spread and angered many Saudis and others around the world.

The Justice Ministry quickly intervened, stressing that al-Ghamdi was still in custody.

In the mean time, anger over Lama’s brutal death has since turned to outrage over the possible release of her killer. Lama’s mother is planning to testify against her ex-husband in an attempt t push for a stricter punishment.
