The Murder of Crystal Faye Todd, Teenager Brutally Murdered By Friend She Trusted

Crystal Faye Todd (January 4, 1974 – November 17, 1991)

Conway, South Carolina, was experiencing a cool Saturday evening on November 16, 1991. Located in Horry County, only a dozen miles from Myrtle Beach, the small southern community had not long settled from the resort season’s large influx of tourists. Most of the stores, hotels and restaurants were back to doing regular business. Traffic on the streets had thinned and the town’s citizens were pleased to return to their normal routines.

Conway’s teenagers traditionally spent Saturday night downtown at its only mall. The teens all knew each other and attended the same high school. Coastal Mall was the place to be seen. They would cruise around, exchange small talk, make plans and just hang out.

Attractive 17-year-old Crystal Faye Todd was in her senior year at Conway High School. She was popular and well-liked among her classmates and a good student. Shoulder-length brown hair framed her bright blue eyes and ever-present smile. Although only five-feet-three inches tall, Crystal’s vivacious personality augmented her petite frame.

Early that evening, Crystal attended her grandmother’s birthday dinner party in the neighboring community of Toddsville. At 7 p.m. Crystal left the party and climbed into her new 1991 Celica. Her mother, Bonnie Faye Todd, had given her the car as an early graduation present. Crystal was happy to be driving again. Her license had been suspended for an accident she had while driving under the influence of alcohol. The car was her pride and joy and even had her name “C TODD” emblazoned on a personalized plate.

Crystal Todd was no different than her schoolmates. She looked forward to joining them at the mall, realizing there would not be many more opportunities for her to do so. Graduation was only several months away and she and many of her classmates would be moving on with their lives and careers.

When Crystal arrived at the mall, she hung out with friends. By 8 p.m. she was standing in the parking lot talking with a girlfriend. At 9 p.m. both girls left the mall in Crystal’s car and drove to a party that was being held at a friend’s home in the Punchbowl community. It was almost 9:30 by the time they arrived. At 11 p.m., Crystal and her girlfriend left the party. Her friend had an 11:15 curfew and had to get back to the mall where her car was parked. Crystal dropped her girlfriend off at her car in the parking lot. Crystal drove off, not seeming to be in a hurry. She and her mother had agreed upon a curfew time of midnight. Click here to continue reading the Crystal Faye Todd murder case by Crime Library

Teen girl stabbed her best friend to death because she didn’t ‘like her anymore’

16 year old Rachel Shoaf (left) along with a juvenile accomplice, stabbed her best friend 16 year old Skylar Neese (right) to death because she didn’t ‘like her anymore;’ then hid her body for months.

Emerging details of a teen’s murder confession, who claimed she acted out a preplanned stabbing last summer, have shaken a small West Virginia community.

On May 1, 2013 Rachel Shoaf, of Morgantown, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Skylar Neese and she awaits sentencing in a juvenile detention center. Another unnamed girl is also facing charges.

Now, a newly released transcript of a secret plea hearing reveals that Shoaf said she and the second girl carried out a plan to kill Neese.

shoaf-neeseFriends: Rachel Shoaf (on the right in both pictures) has confessed to stabbing Skylar Neese (left) to death last summer

Court documents offer no insight into the motive for the crime. On May 1, Skylar’s father said the only reason he could think of was that they ‘didn’t like her any more.’

WDTV reported that Dave Neese stated: ‘They didn’t like her anymore. That’s the only response I got.

‘I want a reason, I want some kind of reason (for this to) happen. There is no reason I don’t care if you have the best reason in the world, but there’s no reason (for this to happen).’

Neese added of Rachel Shoaf: ‘I feel bad for your parents and I hope you rot in hell.’

The victim was last seen on surveillance video leaving her family’s apartment voluntarily and getting into a car on July 6, 2012.

She was initially considered a runaway, but her parents soon suspected she was abducted.

Police chased numerous leads with no luck. The break finally came when Shoaf admitted plotting with another girl to kill her – shocking even the investigators working the case.

Skylar Neese disappeared in July 2012 and was initially thought to be a runaway but her parents soon suspected she had been abducted

The two girls were charged with luring the straight-A student at University High School out of her family’s apartment in the middle of the night, stabbing her to death at an agreed-upon moment and hiding her body under branches in a Pennsylvania township about 30 miles away from her house, according to court documents.

The pair had spent time with Neese’s mother after the slaying and even helped with the search.

The cold calculation and brutality of the plot shocked a community already frustrated by the slow pace and secrecy surrounding the case.

shoafPictured; Rachel Shoaf, of Morgantown, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Skylar Neese and she awaits sentencing in a juvenile detention center.

Investigators have said little since announcing the charges three weeks ago.

People sit in the chairs at John’s Barber Shop, gaze at Neese’s photo on a bulletin board and wonder: How could anyone so young plot to kill a classmate and friend?

‘They look as normal as any other kid that you could ever see,’ said barber BJ McClead. ‘Not kids you would think would have anything to do with anything like this.’

The other girl’s identity is, for now, shrouded by the confidentiality of juvenile court.

Though McClead says most people in town have figured out who it is, it’s unclear how long the three girls had been friends or just how close they were.

It’s also unclear whether prosecutors will try to have the second suspect charged as an adult, as Shoaf was.

‘People are confused. They’re like, “What is taking so long?”‘ said McClead, whose daughter Hayden had been friends with Neese since junior high.

‘It’s ridiculous. Who’s protecting these girls?’ said the barber, who still hands out red-and-yellow bracelets bearing the victim’s name.

‘Three families’ lives are now ruined because of this heinous crime that these girls committed.’

Monongalia County Prosecutor Marcia Ashdown has refused to return repeated calls seeking comment.

The mystery began last July when Neese climbed out of her bedroom window.

Surveillance video showed her getting into a car at the end of her street in a quiet residential neighborhood near West Virginia University.

With no sign of fear, no money and no contact lenses, she apparently expected to return.

When she didn’t, Dave and Mary Neese worried. Police initially suspected their daughter was a runaway, but they knew better. They walked up and down Crawford Street with Neese’s photo, then plastered fliers everywhere.

‘You couldn’t go 5 feet without seeing her,’ said 24-year-old Brittany Crouse, who moved in around the time of the disappearance. ‘Everybody really, really wanted her to come home.’

For months, police chased down tips to no avail. The transcript from Shoaf’s hearing shows the break came January 3, 2013 when she finally told investigators the truth – and where to find the body.

But it wasn’t until March that authorities confirmed it was Neese, and silence followed until the day of the plea hearing.

‘I think police who were involved in the front lines of that interview and that part of the investigation were stunned at Rachel Shoaf’s confession,’ Ashdown told Judge Russell Clawges that day.

‘She confessed to a plan and conspiracy with another juvenile to kill Skylar Neese. A plan carried out.’

The three girls drove to Wayne Township, Pa., got out of the car and the suspects pretended to socialize with Neese.

‘And, at a planned and agreed upon moment,’ Ashdown said, the girls ‘attacked and stabbed Skylar to death, and they left her there.’

They tried to bury Neese, she said, but covered her with branches when they couldn’t.

In the five-page court file on Shoaf, prosecutors say they plan to recommend a 20-year prison sentence. But she could get as many as 40 years under the law.

Shoaf’s family issued a public apology through a lawyer but has made no further statements.

‘There is no way to describe the pain that we, too, are feeling,’ they said.

‘We are truly sorry for the pain that she has caused the Neese family, and we know her actions are unforgivable and inexcusable.

‘Our daughter has admitted her involvement and she has accepted responsibility for her actions.

‘Our hearts are broken for your loss,’ they told the Neese family, ‘and we are still trying to come to terms with this event.’

Mary Neese has declined interview requests. But the family has tried to spare others their agony, persuading legislators to pass ‘Skylar’s Law’ earlier this year.

Under the law, Amber Alerts are no longer limited to kidnappings in West Virginia. Even when authorities suspect a child is a runaway, information is turned over to Amber Alert officials.

The transcript of Shoaf’s hearing shows other students also had suspicions, chattering on social media about all three girls.

A few overheard a conversation between the suspects about the plot but waited to report it.

The teenagers thought it was a joke, Ashdown told the judge, ‘but only later decided and believed it was all too true and all too prophetic.’

McClead marvels that two teenage girls could maintain their deception from July to January. ‘Some of the criminals that are locked up for life aren’t that hard.’

Oklahoma Death Row Inmate Executed Tuesday For The Murder of Three People

steven-ray-thackerMugshot photo of Steven R. Thacker

Steven Ray Thacker, now 42, was sentenced to death for the murders of three people during the Holiday Season in 1999. He was put to death by lethal injection Yesterday, March 12, 2013 at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, after sitting on death row for 13 years.

Victim #1: On December 23, 1999 Laci Dawn Griffin Hill, 25, from Bixby, OK. Hill had placed a classified ad in the local newspaper in an attempt to sell her pool table. Thacker spotted the ad and figured it was a good opportunity so he answered the ad and made his way to Hill’s home where he raped, murdered and robbed her. Hill’s body was discovered in an abandoned cabin on December 29, 1999, just two days before the New Years Day 2000. Thacker used the items and money he had stolen from Hill and purchased presents for his wife and her two children. His would claim the lives of two more people until his capture on January 2, 2000.

Authorities soon identified Thacker on surveillance camera using Hill’s debit card but by then he had already made his way to his next victim in the neighboring state of Missouri, approximately 200 miles from Bixby.

Victim #2: On New Years Day 2000 Thacker stabbed Forrest Reed Boyd, 25, after Boyd walked in on Thacker burglarizing his Aldrich, MO home. He stole Boyd’s vehicle and made his way down to Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Victim #3: Ray Patterson, 52, was a tow truck driver Dyersburg, TN. It just so happens that he was working at the time Thacker’s stolen vehicle broke down.  He contacted the tow service and when Patterson noticed the credit card used to pay for the service was stolen, he was stabbed to death.

Thacker received two death sentences for the murders of Hill and Paterson. He received life without parole for pleading guilty to killing Boyd.

According to reports, he had a personality disorder but refused medication which would have helped his mood swings.

When asked if he had any last words he went on to apologize for his actions.

“”I would like to apologize sincerely to the families of Laci Hill, Forrest Boyd and Ray Patterson. I don’t deserve it, but as God has forgiven me, I hope you will forgive me for the pain I’ve caused.”

Thacker then winked at his stepfather, Donald Johnston, who silently nodded back at him. He was administered the lethal cocktails moments later at 6:03PM. He was pronounced dead at 6:10PM

When the execution was over, Nikki Hodgson, a friend of Hill’s, spoke about the experience saying it brought “a little bit of closure,” but that she didn’t believe the punishment was just.

“It is so humane,” she said of lethal injection. Thacker is “just going to sleep. It’s nothing like what the victims endured.”

“When something like this happens … you never truly move on. You just survive. It never leaves you, and this won’t make it leave you,” Marnie Reed, Hill’s best friend said after the execution.

According to the Death Penalty Information Website, last year there were 43 people on Oklahoma’s death row. Six were put to death bringing the toll down to 37, and Thacker is the first to be put to death this year which brings the toll to 36. He was the fifth death row inmate to have been put to death in the United States this year.

Darren Dee O’Neall – Sexual Predator And Serial Killer

darren_o'neallFull Name: Darren Dee O’Neall
Date of Birth: Born February 26, 1960 in Albuquerque, NM
Characteristics & Traits: Pathological liar, thief, dead beat father, drifter, sociopath, rapist, murderer
Number of victims: Six (known victims)
Location of Murders: Washington – Oregon – Idaho – Utah – USA
Date of murders: Threw out 1987
Date of arrest: September 22, 1987
Age at time of arrest: 27
Method of Murder: Stabbing with knife / Hitting with a hammer
Motive of Murder: Sexual Predator

Darren O’Neall didn’t have a positive childhood which would mold him into the person he became. A psychopath.

O’Neall grew up a pathological liar and when he hit his teen years he became interested in watching and performing violent sex acts and taking part in illegal behavior. He had impregnated woman and left them to fend parenthood alone. A transient, he traveled the western United States reading the novels of his favorite author, Louis L’Amour, who would regularly write books about cowboys, Indians, gunslinger, outlaws, Texas Rangers and frontier marshals. O’Neall envisioned himself as the characters he read about and even assumed alias’ using their names.

As a teenager he would commit petty thefts and other illegal activity. He never had a proper home life to give him any balance and his behavior continued to grow more dark. As he grew older he started frequenting bars and pubs and remained a loner who went unnoticed among the public. In fact, aside from family and the few friendships he managed to have, it seemed the only people who knew about O’Neall were different Law Enforcement agencies throughout several states. Officers would describe him as a man who kept on his feet most likely in an attempt to stay one step ahead of the law.

Petty thefts would soon turn  to burglary and robbery, carjackings and then assaults, and in 1987 his crimes would turn fatal and ruin the lives of many families.

Robin Pamela Smith, born in New Britain, CT, on April 4, 1965. On the night of March 28, 1987 when she was 22 years old, she left her home for a party with her new friend, “Herb Johnson”. Family and friends didn’t know much about her new male friend. They also didn’t think for a moment that she would never return home.

Photo of Robin Smith as a child (age 11)

On May 1, 1987, over one month after Robin vanished, police found her vehicle abandoned near Marysville, north of Seattle, WA. When they searched the trunk they found her bloody clothes and several of her teeth. She had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer. Police already feared the worst but after the gruesome discovery they were certain of her death and immediately started to investigate to determine a possible suspect. A check on the vehicles registration revealed it had been stolen two weeks prior in Nampa, Idaho.

The owner of the vehicle was a trucker who recalled the thief in vivid detail. He described a young, blonde man with the word “JUNE” tattooed on the knuckles of his left hand. The trucker had picked him up and offered him a place to stay the night.

Apparently no deed goes unpunished and when the trucker woke up the following morning the unidentified man was gone and his vehicle had been stolen along with his licensed gun, a .357 magnum revolver.

The tattoo description gave authorities a clue which would eventually lead to the culprit. A culprit who was running from child support payments after abandoning his wife and child six years earlier. Sadly, by the time Robin wasn’t the first nor the last victim of the killers bloody rampage on woman.

The Stalking of Laurie Show

Laurie Show, age 15.

School photo of Laurie Show within a year or two prior to her death

Below story published by Find A Death by an online user. I do not know the actual source of the article/story however, the link to the thread is below. (Photos were gathered threw out the internet including the Crime Library and Murderpedia.)

First a little about Laurie Show. She was a  16-year-old girl who, in the early 90’s, attended Conestoga Valley High School in Lampeter Township, Pennsylvania. She was a typical teen. She didn’t ‘rebel’ and was considered a very good student who got good grades, attended church and enjoyed reading the Bible. She was very friendly, liked to hang out with her friends, was very close to her mother, Hazel Show, and her father who was divorced from Hazel. Some activities she enjoyed was bowling, going to the movies, swimming, etc. Unfortunately Laurie, who was very friendly and kindhearted, met another young woman named Lisa Michelle Lambert who went by her middle name, Michelle. It was a quick ‘friendship’ that quickly turned fatal.

connestoga-valley-high-scho

It was the summer of 1991 in East Lampeter Township, Penn. Before the year was over, four teenagers from different circles would find themselves drawn into a deadly triangle that would end in the tragic death of 16 year old Laurie Show.

Lisa Michelle Lambert began dating Lawrence “Butch” Yunkin, despite that fact that Yunkin had physically assaulted Lambert and raped her when the two started ‘dating’.

Soon the couples fixation with each other would spin horribly out of control and they began having violent arguments. The destructive relationship only got worse when the couple began using other people to make each other jealous. This particular summer, Lawrence sought out 15 year old Laurie Show. A move that would prove fatal.

butch_michelle

Photo of Lawrence and Michelle shortly before their imprisonment. Michelle had naturally brown hair but dyed it blonde. She also had brown eyes but regularly wore blue contacts.

Laurie was a fun-loving and popular 10th grader who everybody loved to be around. The couple dated twice during a one week relationship. On their second date, Lawrence raped the innocent 15 year old in the back of his van, a charge which Yunkin denies.. After the alleged date rape, Laurie confided her terrible secret in both her parents. It was during this time frame, Lisa and Lawrence got back together.

When Lisa learned that Lawrence had dated Laurie she nearly went insane with jealousy. However, it wasn’t the dating that had Lisa in an uproar, it was the idea that Lawrence had slept with another girl, completely ignoring the fact that it was not consensual.

tabitha-buck yunkin

butch_yunkinThree small photos, one is a high school photo of Tabitha Buck taken within a year or two prior to her imprisonment, and the other two photos are Lawrence Yunkin.

These violent, jealous feelings grew into uncontrollable urges when Lisa learned she was pregnant. Lisa would then take her pent-up anger and fixate it on 16 year old Laurie Show by stalking her in public, threatening her, calling her home dozens of times and leaving lewd messages. One day, Lambert followed Show and her mother, Hazel Show, to the grocery market. She then walked up to them and starting screaming and calling Show names before turning her attention to Show’s mother and telling her that her daughter was a “slut who has ruined her life”.

Lambert, who was a few months pregnant at this time, followed Show to a store parking lot one afternoon and beat her up.

Show was so terrified of Lambert that she never went anywhere alone. She wouldn’t even stay at her home alone. Her parents took turns staying at the apartment with her, or taking her with them on errands.

On the night of December 19, 1991 – Hazel Show receives a call from a woman claiming to be Laurie’s guidance counselor requesting a meeting early the next morning. Lisa Michelle Lambert stops at the local K-Mart and purchases two ski masks and a rope then appears at the apartment of Tabitha Buck upset and wanting to talk. Tabitha would later tell that Lisa was upset over a possible legal problem regarding her pervious assaults on Laurie Show. It was a lack in judgment that Tabitha Buck will never forgive herself for. Lambert went on to inform Buck to wear her hair up, not to wear any make up or fingernail polish the next morning.

Tabitha made her way to the door, with every step her feet felt ten times heavier. She raised her hand and knocked at the door. Laurie answered the door and “I asked if Hazel was home and she said ‘No.’ I asked again for some reason.” Lambert comes up behind Buck and charges in front of her into the Show home where a brief struggle ensues. The two began struggling, arms flailing. For one brief instance Laurie felt freedom as Lisa released her with a shove. Laurie ran towards Buck as Lambert screamed, “Don’t let her out! Stop her!” just as Laurie ran into Buck and the door. Laurie grabbed the sunglasses off of Bucks face and tossed them across the room, scratching her in the process.

“She didn’t get out,” Buck tells the story quietly from prison during an interview with a local paper. Tabitha catches a gleam of something shiny and realizes that Lambert has a knife. Laurie must have seen the blade at approximately the same time, though she made an attempt to grab it from Lambert. Considering her fearful state, I don’t think she realized that she was grabbing the blade itself or perhaps she didn’t care. In either event, Lambert yanked the knife back causing wounds on Laurie’s hand.

“There was blood,” Tabitha recounts somberly, “Laurie went running back to a room. Michelle went after her. Then me.”

Tabitha watched in horror as Michelle grabbed Laurie by the hair and drew the knife through it, chopping off handfuls of her hair then began savagely beating her. Tabitha recalls seeing Laurie with the phone but is unsure of what happened to it. Laurie tried to fight off her attacker as best she could by kicking her, but Lambert was enraged and Laurie had no chance.

Laurie, still surprised and unsure of what was expected of her is tearfully questing Lambert, “What do you want? Leave me alone!” Her plea’s went unnoticed by Lambert who was at this point was uncontrollable to any extent. The jealousy and anger she had for Laurie built up into rage by this point. Laurie was bent over on her stomach as Lambert began beating her again, this time hitting her in the head with the knife. Michelle handed Tabitha the knife at that point and reached for the rope attempting to put it over Laurie’s head. Tabitha recalls Lisa telling Laurie “Stop struggling Laurie.” Michelle demanded, “It’ll be a lot easier this way.” as she attempts to place the rope around Laurie’s neck. Lambert finally gets the rope around her neck, but Laurie begins struggling again. As Laurie leaned a little bit further over, Tabitha saw her reach for a pair of scissors and knocked them out her reach. Buck winces as she recalls the event. Lisa Michelle Lambert, driven into a jealous rage tells Tabitha to “Cut her throat” Buck refuses. Lisa takes the knife back from Buck and tired of Laurie’s struggling, she cut’s her in the leg and tells her to stop struggling.

Laurie had by now rolled over on her and began kicking at Lambert again. Laurie, desperately fighting for her life, is screaming, hitting, kicking, attempting any means of escape as Lambert again screams “You’re going to kill my baby! Don’t let her kill my baby!” Lambert screamed. “Grab her feet! Make her stop kicking!” Buck in response to Lambert’s cries placed herself on Laurie’s legs facing the door and away from the horror unfolding behind her. In the next instant Laurie stopped moving. The moment Laurie stopped moving, Tabitha slowly raises herself off of Laurie’s legs and turns in shock to a scene that should have been in a horror movie. She watched as Lisa Michelle Lambert drew the knife across Laurie’s throat as though she were cutting a loaf of bread.

“Is she dead?”  Tabitha asked in horror.

“I don’t know.” Lisa responded then proceeded to cut Laurie’s throat further in an attempt to make certain she was indeed dead. Tabitha watched as Lisa Michelle Lambert held Laurie’s chin back with her left hand and cut her throat numerous more times.

Within minutes, a 16 year old innocent child was dead at the hands of two killers. One committed the act, the other did nothing to prevent it.

When Lambert was finished carving 16 year old Laurie Show up, she handed the tip of the knife to Tabitha. Tabitha placed the tip in her coat pocket, picked up her sunglasses that had been knocked off during the initial confrontation and together, the two killers left the condo and Laurie Show bleeding to death on the floor on her bedroom.

At approximately 7:20 a.m. Hazel Show returned home only to be stopped by a concerned neighbor questioning her as to what was going on upstairs to cause so much commotion. Hazel dropped everything and ran, a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. No person, certainly not a mother, should ever have to witness the scene the Hazel Show was greeted with when entering her 16 year old daughters bedroom. When entering Laurie’s bedroom, Hazel saw Laurie in the middle of her bedroom floor lying in a puddle of her own blood. A rope was knotted around her neck and her throat was savagely cut.

Hazel shrieked in horror, screamed for her neighbor to call 911 and cradled her daughter, telling her that she was sorry, and that she (Laurie) didn’t do anything wrong. Laurie managed to whisper three words before she died. “Michelle did it”.

Lisa Lambert was arrested the same day.

lisa-michelle-lambertVERDICT:

After waiving her right to a trial by jury, Ms. Lambert proceeded to trial and was found guilty of first degree murder and criminal conspiracy to commit murder on July 20, 1992. The Commonwealth elected to seek the death penalty in the Lambert case. NYC: Fury over Facebook campaign to prove innocence of New York nanny who ‘murdered two children in bath-tub’

Update – 11/09/12 – NYC — Fury over Facebook campaign to prove innocence of New York nanny who ‘murdered two children in bath-tub’

  • Facebook page set up in support of Yoselyn Ortega has caused a massive backlash on the social networking site
  • ‘Support Innocence of Nanny Yoselyn Ortega’ believes that the nanny was not responsible for the killings of six-year-old Lucia and two-year-old Leo
  • Mother Marina Krim, found her children dead the bathtub in Upper West Side apartment on October 25th

A Facebook campaign which claims alleged killer nanny Yoselyn Ortega was not responsible for the deaths of two children in her care has provoked outrage.

The page ‘Support Innocence of Nanny Yoselyn Ortega’ – set up by an anonymous group – is pleading for any information ‘that could help bring the real killer or killers to be arrested.’

And since the page was launched on October 29th – four days after the brutal stabbings of Lucia Krim and brother Leo in their Manhattan home – it has sparked fury from people who believe that Ortega, 50,  should ‘rot in hell’, be ‘put to death’ to those who think it is plain ‘disgusting’.

‘We believe she did not do this crime and she deserves to have her day in court to defend against the charges to prove her case in a not guilty verdict,’ said the administrators to Radaronline.com – who are now facing calls for them to shut down the page.

While the family nanny has admitted to harming the two children in her care on the Upper West Side, police sources have told the New York Daily News that she has not confessed to the double murder.

And users of the social networking site have responded with fury to some of the more outrageous allegations made on the page that are aimed at providing evidence for Ortega’s innocence.

‘This is absolutely disgusting,’ wrote one Facebook user.

‘I hope you burn in hell along with Yoselyn you piece of cr*p. You need a psych evaluation because it’s obvious you’re attention seeking.’

Claiming to represent the family of Yoselyn Ortega, the page has only received 16 ‘likes’ since its launch almost two weeks ago and asks readers to pray for her freedom.

‘There was friction between her and the family.’

In Ortega’s brief statement to police, she said her employers had arranged to give her an extra five hours a week in housekeeping work to help her make more money, law-enforcement sources told the Post.

‘They were asking her to clean and do housework and she was unhappy because it interfered with her doctor’s appointments.’

It was also revealed today that Marina and Kevin Krim were worried about Ortega’s job performance in the weeks leading up to the October 25 slaying and had told her that if she didn’t improve her job performance they might need to replace her.

A law-enforcement source told the Post: ‘She was told that if she didn’t improve her work, she would be let go.’

Last week, the mother of CNBC executive Kevin Krim said that the young family treated Ortega, as they would one of their own, ‘bending over backwards’ to help her and even buying plane tickets so she could fly to the Dominican Republic with them.

Oretega allegedly repaid this kindness by murdering her children before trying to kill herself. Marina Krim discovered her son and daughter, Leo and Lulu, in a pool of blood in a bathtub, each with multiple stab wounds.

She was due to meet Ortega and her other two children at the local swimming pool with her now only surviving child Nessie, three. But when they failed to show up, she returned to her three-bedroom, $10,000-a-month pre-war apartment at West 75th Street and found it dark, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

When she went into the bedroom, she discovered her children in a pool of blood and a bleeding Ortega.

The nanny, who had slit her wrists, then plunged a kitchen knife into her own neck as the horrified mother walked into the grisly scene, police said. She stabbed herself with such force that she fractured a vertebra in her neck, police said.

Though she looked after the children for two years and was treated like part of the family, the 50-year-old did not ask about them when she woke from her coma, asking instead about her own family before falling back under sedation. Police plan on questioning her again. Charges have yet to be filed.

Ortega’s sister Miladys said she spoke to her sister in the days leading up to the massacre and she gave her no indication anything was wrong.

But the nanny’s neighbors said she appeared in troubled in the weeks leading up to the murders and she had been struggling with money issues – which is why the Krims offered her more work.

Ortega remains at nearby New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Toxicology tests performed on Ortega came back negative.

Neighbor Rima Starr, 63, recalls the moment she heard Mrs Krim make the grisly discovery.: ‘I heard blood curdling screams and I went down to the lobby and there was the mother screaming, hunched over the three year old.

‘At time she was screaming things like: “I’ll never speak to her again”, repeating that over and over again, then “it’s all right, you’ll be all right, you’ll be alright” to the child.

‘Then she would get waves of the reality of what just happened and then she’d go into just plain bloodcurdling screams with her arms flailing out to the sides.’

One neighbor revealed the superintendent of the apartment block went into the apartment and questioned Ortega, demanding: ‘So you cut her throat? So you stabbed her in the neck?’

His wife then came out to assist and told horrified neighbours who had heard the screams: ‘Two babies, in the bath, nanny’ and made a cutting sign across her throat.

Mrs Friedman added: ‘At that point I knew the nanny had something to do with it’.

Neighbours dialed 911 and, although Lulu and Leo reportedly appeared to be breathing when medics arrived, they were pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Ortega was unresponsive but was taken to New York-Cornell Hospital in a critical but stable condition. She was in a stable condition on Friday morning and police sources say she may have also taken pills.

Mrs Krim and Nessie, who had not witnessed the grisly scene, were also taken to hospital for treatment, and Mrs Krim was sedated.

A neighbour told the Wall Street Journal the woman had left the building ‘inconsolable, hysterical, frantic’.

Her husband, Kevin Krim, had been on a business trip and was met by police at the airport when he returned to New York. Officers recounted the horror to him and he was escorted to the hospital.

Mr and Mrs Krim remained at St. Luke’s hospital last night with Mrs Krim’s sister. Police said the shocked mother was unable to communicate.

On Friday, neighbour Charlotte Friedman said she believes she was the last one to see the children alive and that the nanny had looked ‘cold’ just half an hour before the murders.

She said that she was in the elevator with Ortega, who had a ‘poker face’ and appeared unemotional despite Lulu and Leo playing around.

‘I was playing with the children in the elevator,’ Friedman said. ‘The girl looked so delightful. I asked her if she was going on a play date or something and she said she was going home.

‘I said, “What did you do,” and she said, “Dancing.” And that was it – they were only on the second floor so they left.

‘She was smiling, happy, happy happy. The nanny just smiled – and nothing. The nanny was a colder type from most nannies that I have encountered.

‘She was poker faced. She wasn’t the warmest person. I never saw her as the warmest nanny.’

Ortega’s niece, Katherine Garcia, added that her aunt had been ‘acting kind of nervous lately’ but insisted that she had loved the children.

Friends said she had lost her apartment in the Bronx and was forced to move in her sister in Harlem. Police added that her family said she may have visited a psychologist recently.

Police said there were no immediate explanations for the murders and suicide attempt. Paul J. Browne, from the police department, told the New York Times he did not know a note had been left.

The family had moved to New York from San Francisco within the last few years, and Mr Krim was named general manager of CNBC’s digital media division in March.

He is a Harvard graduate and has recently worked at Bloomberg and Yahoo, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The children’s grandmother on their father’s side, Karen Krim, told said that the family hired Ortega a year ago, until which time Mrs Krim had been a stay-at-home mother.

When Leo was born, they searched for a nanny. They even spent nine days with her family in the Dominican Republic, as documented on Mrs Krim’s online journal.

‘They just bent over backwards being nice to this woman,’ Karen Kim told the New York Daily News. ‘They were always doing things that were just fabulous for her. I’m just astounded, and I have no idea why something like this would happen.’

She added: ‘We’re just having a really, really hard time here. It’s the worst nightmare any parent could ever have.’

Mrs Krim, who teaches weekly art lessons to children, kept an online journal entitled ‘Life with the Krim Kids’, which she had last updated just three hours before the murders.

She had written: ‘Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible.’

The online journal paints a tender picture of her life with her husband and their beloved children, and gives an insight into the horrendous loss that has befallen the family.

She documents trips to pick apples, visits to pumpkin patches and playdates. Photographs show the children playing happily together around the home and on their first days of school.

‘One of the best parts of my day is after I drop both girls off at school and have 3 precious hours with little Lito all to myself,’ she wrote. ‘Ok, I’m near getting cheesy I adore this boy so much!!!’

She added how he loved to play with toy cars and trucks, and would set up his own ‘kitchen’ in the living room where he would pretend to make bacon.

‘Lito, I must say, is a very clever little boy,’ she wrote. ‘He is super talkative and just has a million thoughts running through his brain and can express himself amazingly well for an almost-2 year old.  I’m thinking he could be a Mini-Kevin.’

The family lives in one of the city’s most idyllic neighborhoods, just a block from Central Park and a few more from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

It is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there, making the idea of such violence even more disturbing to residents.

Mrs Friedman added that the Krims are a quiet, nice friendly’ family.

She said: ‘They were sweet people. They had two large dogs they used to walk, they were greyhounds I think. The children were full of life.’

All morning a steady stream of passers by stopped off at the apartment block to lay flowers, some of whom were in tears.

Among the tributes was a card on some flowers which read: ‘Dear Krim Family. We weep with you at your horrible loss. There are no words that can express our sadness. We pray for you and your beautiful children.

‘Every mother and father weeps with you and your family during this dark time’.

Police officers could be seen taking bags of evidence out of the building and at one point removed what appeared to be a long piece of wood which was about 12ft long.

‘LIFE WITH THE KRIM KIDS’: DOCUMENTING A HAPPY FAMILY

Marina Krim’s online journal, Life with the Krim Kids, paints a tender picture of life with her husband and their children – and gives an insight into the horrendous loss that has befallen the family.

Consisting of mostly photographs, the blog documents trips to pick apples, visits to pumpkin patches and playdates. Images show the children playing happily together around the home, on their first days of school and at ballet recitals

Hours before his death, she wrote: ‘Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible.’

Of her eldest daughter Lulu, who was also killed on Thursday, she joked: ‘Lulu is in love. His name is Joakim, he’s 1/2 British, 1/2 Swedish.  He lives in our apartment building and speaks with a British accent, is a total hipster and we love his parents. She gets totally giddy around him. Not sure Lulu knows this but Joakim has 2 other girlfriends as well…’

She later added: ‘Lulu has another boyfriend — When I picked her up from school yesterday, she told me that Martin (pronounced ‘Mar-teen’, he’s half-french, half-peruvian) is her boyfriend and her valentine.  Apparently, she kissed him twice.’

Last year, she wrote: ‘When I ask Lulu what she wants to be when she grows up, she always says she wants to be a Mama. And she is going to be a really good one.’

In February, she added photos from the family’s trip to the Dominican Republic, where they saw the family of their nanny.

‘It was wonderful,’ she wrote. ‘And we met Josie’s amazing family! The Dominican Republic is a wonderful country!!’

The Greyhound Bus Beheading

Photo’s above/below show Tim McLean, a young man brutally murdered while resting on a Greyhound bus on his way home from work

EDMONTON, CANADA — Tim McLean, Jr, born October 3, 1985 was a 22-year-old Canadian carnival worker who lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba located in Canada.  Due to his job, the young man had to travel and take the Greyhound bus to transport back home.

Those who knew Tim had nothing but great things to say about him, according to a friend,  he was a laid-back person with a great personality that could make even the saddest person smile. The type of guy who was respectful to everyone and never got into trouble.

On July 30, 2008 Tim boarded a greyhound bus and was on his way to Winnipeg after working all day at the carnival in Edmonton. He had sent his father a quick text-message asking him if he could come home for the night. His father messaged him back telling him of course he could.

That was the last contact the two would ever have.

The bus was pretty packed and loud so the young man decided to take out his headphones and listen to some music and relax, probably tired from a long day of work. After putting his head-phones on he laid his head back on the seat and closed his eyes, minding his own business and eventually nodding off.

Unfortunately, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmondton was also on the Greyhound that same night.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, in a photo taken after the greyhound incident. He is being led by officers

Tim McLean was attacked randomly with a butcher knife

Li was initially sitting by himself but for some reason he suddenly moved from his seat and sat in the empty one next to Tim, who was still sleeping with his head leaned back. As the bus was driving on the Trans Canada Highway, about 18 miles west of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Tim minding his business, still resting when all of a sudden, with no rhyme or reason, Li took out a butcher’s knife (shown above) an within seconds, he stabbed him in his throat. Garnet Caton, a witness on the bus that night, said he heard a “blood curling scream” and turned around to see Li repeatedly stabbing Tim.

Passengers on the bus were shocked, screaming in horror as Li, 40, continued to stab the young man who at this point awoke to his violent death. Li continued to stab him between 40 to 60 times. The passengers were scrambling to get out of the bus which was stopped on the TC-Highway. It all happened within moments and amid all the chaos, some of the bus-goers still didn’t understand what was going on, but it soon sank in and the horror-stricken passengers by this point, were outside of the bus.  Some kept running, others puked, all were shocked at the brutality of the crime.

The bus driver, a passenger and a driver of a truck who had pulled over moments earlier, trapped Li inside the bus until the police came.

During this time, Li had already decapitated Tim. He then slowly walked up to the front of the bus, holding up the young man’s head in an attempt to show everyone outside the bus what he had done. He then waved the head at the shocked audience. At this point he was already in the front of the bus and stared coldly at the three men blocking the doorway, even slashing the butcher knife at them, but thankfully missing. But that didn’t stop the brave men from keeping him locked in the bus.

Police arrived after what felt like hours. A stand-off ensued for several hours but eventually, officer’s were able to contain and put the handcuffs on him.

Officers and their vehicles surround the Greyhound bus during the stand-off

Authorities at the crime scene after the horrific murder

Tim McLean and Vince Li did not know each other. The random attack appeared to be unprovoked. Police later found the ears belonging to the victim in the pockets of Li who is also believed to have consumed parts of his victim.

The Greyhound bus had made its last stop in Brandon, Manitoba on a long journey that originated in Edmonton, Alberta and headed for Winnipeg. The attack occurred approximately 12 miles west of Portage La Prairie, on a desolate plains stretch of the Trans Canada Highway. Men, women and children who witnessed the attack were in shock, crying, some becoming physically ill as they waited by the roadside for several hours while police tried to get Li to exit the bus. He was finally apprehended at 1:28 am after Li tried to break out of a bus window.

Canada.com:
“He didn’t do anything to provoke the guy. The guy just took a knife out and stabbed him, started stabbing him like crazy and cut his head off,” said Garnet Caton, 26, a passenger on the Edmonton to Winnipeg bus on the night of 07/30/08

BBC:
“He calmly walks up to the front [of the bus] with the head in his hand and the knife and just calmly stares at us and drops the head right in front of us,” Mr Caton said.
“There was no rage in him… It was just like he was a robot or something,” he added.

The attack appeared to be unprovoked and it is thought the killer did not know his victim.

The passengers, many of whom were badly shaken by what they witnessed, were taken to a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, and were given crisis counselling.

Canton also indicated that right before the attack, Li had just changed seats to sit next to his victim. Tim McLean, who had boarded the bus in Edmonton, was a summer carnival worker for the past three years at Vancouver’s Pacific National Exhibition.

On Friday, a bruised and bandaged Li appeared in court in Portage La Prairie, where he was charged with second degree murder. Li said few words and nodded his head when Judge Rocky Pollack asked him if he was exercising his right not to speak. Pollack ordered a psychological evaluation of Li pending Li having the opportunity to speak to an attorney. Li worked for a MacDonald’s in Edmonton as well as delivering newspapers for a distribution firm. His delivery employer, Vincent Augert said,

“I believe he was having some marital problems.” When he met with Li to hire him back as a newspaper distributor, he said, “you could almost read between the lines” from the way Li was talking “that there was something not right there.”

Just as the bus was leaving Brandon, McLean sent a text message to his father, asking if he could come home for a night, Tim McLean, Sr., told CBS news. That was his last communication with his son.

Friends of McLean bonded together to grieve for a man described as a “sweet man,” a “ladies man,” a “bright and bubbly guy who was always out for fun.” One friend, who traveled with him had nicknamed McLean “Tiny Tim.”

I can’t imagine the terror that these passengers went through, having to witness this horrific event. Please leave a condolence message for the family of Tim McLean, here, whose bright life ended so tragically.

A Friend To Die For

kirsten-costasLeft; Kirsten M. Costas as a child and right photo shows her as a teenager (right)

Kirsten Costas was a 15-year-old Freshman who attended Miramonte Highschool in Orinda in Northern California.  She was a petite, wavy-haired brunette who was described as popular among her peers. Outgoing, witty, sarcastic and confident are just a few charactor-traits that describe  her. She had a good home life and was the oldest of two children. She enjoyed going to school and excelled in many different things including being a member of the varsity swim team, cheerleader, she worked in the student office and was a member of the “Bobbies”, a sorority that female students attempted to be part of but only a small chosen few achieved.

bernadette-protti-school-photo

Freshman class photo of Bernadette Protti (She looks fairly decent in this photo but the photos below in this story will show her looks were often unappealing.)

Bernadette Protti, then 16, was also a student who attended Miramonte High School. She was described as a quiet “bookworm” who studied and received good grades, and someone who had alot of potential when it came to education. She was respectful to teachers and always got her school work done, attended church, arrived to class each day on time, had a good family upbringing. Your typical good teenager who didn’t rebel.

However, from a students point of view Bernadette was kind but a bit of a follower. Every teenager wishes they were ‘popular’ but many aren’t and learn to accept it. Bernadette was the few who refused to accept it. She rarely went out on weekends mainly due to the fact that she was never invited to social-outings, which bothered her because she wanted so badly to be socially accepted.

She was a huge wannabe according to students who grew up with her. She was anxious around many of the popular students, almost on the verge of being socially awkward. She had low confidence, was insecure and had fantasies of being popular. even attempting to become a cheerleader which, by the way, she failed to do.

The closest she had to the in-crowd was a childhood friend who she grew up with and attended church with. They drifted apart as they entered middle and high school and the childhood friend was paired with Kirsten Costas and her clique, while Bernadette didn’t really fit-in or have a clique, but she did however, have a friend. They were average students on the social-rank, maybe slightly lower but not the lowest rank. They didn’t really stand out and many didn’t know who they were.

Bernadette had a hidden obsession with Kirsten. Why? because Kristen was everything she wasnt. She described her in court as “being good at everything”. She not only had the grades, she had the popularity, boys, social life, style, personality and confidence. The severity of Bernadette’s obsession to be accepted would become apparent a little later down the road.

Everyone at Miramonte High School knew Kirsten even if they never met her, they knew who she was. Bernadette had a class with Kirsten but was mainly ignored. She was quiet and reserved and the only times she would get up close to the in crowd was when her childhood friend was speaking to her in their presence.

Bernadette knew that being friends with Kirsten was her biggest chance at popularity because she over-shadowed her friends and although she tried on several occasions to make small talk with Kirsten, her efforts were always subtly rejected, rebuffed or quickly forgotten. Kirsten popularity and confidence made her a little high maintenance and somewhat stuck up. She had her friends, she had the boys, she had a good family, she had everything and didn’t have room reserved for someone like Bernadette who, in Kirsten’s eyes, was just a follower lurking in the background.

Bernadette started taking up babysitting and used the money to purchase trendy name-brand clothing. She put a hard effort into her appearance in yet another attempt to impress but her stylish attempts were not recognized and it even backfired on her one time.

kirsten-costas-1981

Full body-shot photo of Kirsten Costas (photo is believed to have been taken during a her highschool ski-trip)

In 1985 students go on a ski-trip vacation. Bernadette was super excited to be spending the weekend sharing a dorm-like room with Kirsten and her friends. Finally she thought, a chance to bond. She went out a purchased what she thought was a stylish ski-outfit. Kirsten didn’t think so and made a snide remark on it, sarcastically asking her if she purchased it at a thrift store, which is a second-hand clothing store that sells outfits at an inexpensive price. The store has a low reputation and many assume that families with low-income go there for deals.

Although she didn’t show it, Bernadette was highly upset at the comment and quietly dwelled on it for several days.

Her efforts persisted however. She was definitely a follower and joined many of the same activities as Kirsten’s clique, including a job at the student office where she worked besides Kirsten. Kirsten would ask her to do ‘favors’ that, if caught, could have made Bernadette lose her office privileges. Bernadette agreed and took the chance in an effort to win her admirer over which never worked. She never gained the respect of Kirsten and started becoming more desperate.

This came after her attempt to join the cheerleading squad, which she didn’t make by the way.

Kirsten apparently never took Bernadette seriously. Bernadette was just a child-friend of one of her friends who followed them when she had the opportunity. She never had to struggle with popularity so she wouldn’t have possibly understood the severity and state-of-mind of someone like Bernadette. I’m sure if she knew what the overly sensitive, high-strung teenager was really capable of, she would have stood clear from the gecko. But she didn’t and had no fear of someone like Bernadette who was just a ‘harmless wannabe’ in her eyes.

One night when Bernadette was hanging with (only) close friend, the friend mentioned a party in which a few older high-school boys were throwing. The friend’s sibling was going so she automatically got an invite and decided to bring Bernadette along for company. Bernadette was thrilled at the idea. She instantly thought of inviting Kirsten to this party. She now had the opportunity to show Kirsten that she was going to be at a party thrown by popular high school boys. She rushed to the phone and called the Costas home and when Mrs. Costas answered she told her that she was a “bobbie”, which is a school sorority in which Kirsten was part of, and that they were throwing her daughter a surprise dinner as part of being a new member of the sorority. Mrs. Costas told the caller that she will inform Kirsten and asked what she should wear in which Bernadette replied, something nice but casual for a night out. She didn’t give Kirsten’s mother her name so Kirsten didn’t know exactly who was going to arrive to pick her up, all she knew was that she had to be ready for 8:30PM.

It’s Saturday evening, June 23, 1984 — Kirsten’s parents and brother had already left to attend a dinner for Peter’s little league team. Kirsten is excited and getting ready for her 8:30PM surprise. She attempts to figure it out beforehand and calls a couple of friends that she believes will give up the secret easily. They, also bobbies, tell her that there is no bobbie surprise and that they didn’t know what she was talking about. She somewhat believed them but thought maybe they were just telling her there was no party to keep the surprise going.

bernadette-protti

Pictured; Bernadette Protti

8:30PM, June 23, 1984 — A car honks its horn outside the Costas residence. Kirsten comes outside to find out who is behind this ‘surprise’ dinner. By this point she’s still curious and still planning on going out. She walks outside, leaving the TV on, to the mustard-colored, less than appealing Pinto and discovers Bernadette behind the wheel. Her excitement turns to amusement. Bernadette isn’t someone she would consider a fun person to spend a weekend night out with. She asks her what’s going on and that there was no bobbie dinner. Bernadette excitedly tells her that she just made it up and that the real surprise is even better. After being asked more than once, Bernadette finally tells her that there’s a party being thrown by (name of students unknown). Kirsten says alright and gets in the car and they drive off.

On their way to the party Kirsten asks Bernadette to pull over in an empty parking lot so she could smoke some weed. She notices a butcher knife and asks Bernadette about it who in return laughs, and tells her that her sister takes it in the car to cut fruits and vegetables. Kirsten thinks nothing of it and instead turns her attention on the party, asking her who was going and how she had gotten invited. When she learned the truth that Bernadette hadn’t exactly been invited she became annoyed and said she was going to walk into a party that she wasn’t invited too. Bernadette tried explaining that it’s ok but kept getting cut off by Kirsten, who told her that she wasn’t going to embarrass herself and to just take her home. Bernadette became desperate and in a loud-tone said “NO, that would spoil everything”, in which Kirsten responded “There was never anything to spoil”.

By this point it was getting close to 9PM. Bernadette was getting increasingly desperate and felt this incident was the final blow to any chances she had at a decent reputation. Her last attempt was to plead with Kirsten. She asked her why she had to be so mean. Kirsten rolled her eyes in response. — She then told Kirsten that all she wants to do is be her friend and how much she admired her and wanted to be like her.

If Bernadette was hoping for sympathy she surely didn’t get it.

Kristen at this point was “weirded out” and told her that she was pathetic and was acting like she was in love with her. When Bernadette tried explaining herself she was called a weirdo.

By this point Kirsten was out of Bernadette’s vehicle and fled to the nearest house, knocked on the door and was met by an older couple, Alex and Mary Jane Arnold. She asked if she could use their phone to call for a ride. She explained to them, while pointing to Bernadette’s car in the distance, had “gone weird” on her.

Bernadette was bawling, she knew she blew it and her already rocky reputation was going to be tarnished forever. She was frantic and knew Kirsten was going to make her the butt of the joke at school. She felt that she was going to be the laughing-stock and needed to silence Kirsten before she could ruin her name even more.

When Kirsten could not reach her parents by telephone Alex Arnold offered to drive her home.  On the ride to drop her off he noticed the pinto following them and asked Kirsten if everything was okay with her and her friend, to which Kirsten replied “Yeah, she’s just a little weird”.

Kirsten was supposedly calm during the ride and talked about school and activities. They pulled up to her home on Orchard Road and she stepped out of the car, thanking Mr. Arnold.

She made it to the front door, which was locked, and knocked. That’s when she noticed Bernadette walking towards her fast, yet silent. Bernadette muttered the words “I would have taken you home” too which Kirsten replied, in a loud tone, “Go Away! You are so weird” — Without warning, Bernadette started stabbing her. Kirsten screamed and Bernadette ran off.

Arnold, sitting in his car, witnessed the incident which he thought was a fist fight. He attempted to follow Bernadette’s car but by this point she was long gone. She had fled after the fifth stab. Kirsten neighbor’s heard her screams and came out and noticed her lying on the ground. They called police and comforted the dying teenager until the ambulance came.

Neighbors heard Kirsten’s screams and noticed her lying down in blood. The ambulance was called and she was comforted. She is reported to have struggled, saying “I can’t breathe”, followed by a gurgling noises. She was choking on her own blood and was mortally wounded.

The ambulance raced her to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. A stab wound had gone through a major artery.

She was just one month short of her 16 birthday.

Everyone was shocked and hundreds attended her funeral, including Bernadette who was seen by witnesses crying.

Investigators were at Miramonte High School the upcoming week, questioningg students and having many taking lie detector tests. Bernadette was one of the chosen ones who took the test. It came back inconclusive which didn’t point to guilt, but didn’t point to innocence either. She was asked where she was on the night of the murder. Her (fake) alibi went unverified and Kirsten’s murder went unsolved for six months.

Rumors and theories quickly spread threw-out school. Students were pointing fingers, but none pointing to Bernadette, the quiet wannabe who secretly idolized Kristen.

Many students harassed a girl who they believed was responsible for Kirsten’s murder. The student was labelled a ‘goth’ and Kirsten use to pick on her, so many assumed she freaked and murdered her in revenge.

The next half a year Bernadette lived her outward appearance as normal as possible, but inside she was holding a deep dark secret which gave her overwhelming guilt.

Six months later Investigators went over all their evidence, they finally had a person-of-interest. Bernadette Protti.

After attempting to confirm her alibi and rereading her lie detector test, investigators realized they had no evidence so they decided to give Bernadette another lie-detector-test which proved, in their mind, her guilt. The test showed some lies and some inconclusive. They interrogated Protti in an attempt to gain a confession.. After speaking with a FBI officer.Protti wrote her mother a letter in which she made a full confession.

Bernadette claimed to have found the kitchen knife by chance, and her elder sister Gina testified in court that she used to have that knife in her car to cut her vegetables. The Costa’s did not believe her story – they claimed that nobody would use an 18-inch-long knife to slice tomatoes and that Protti, casually dressed on that evening, never intended to take Kirsten to a party, but had planned to murder her.

Bernadette Protti was sentenced to a maximum of 9-years, but was released 7-years later on parole. She was released from prison in 1992 at the age of 23 she left Ventura County. She changed her name, got married (name change again after marriage). And I believe had children, not sure how many to be exact.

The Costas left Orinda and moved to Hawaii. They did state that they didn’t agree with Bernadette’s release and were disappointed with the Justice System.

This murder-case attracted alot of attention, and in 1994, the case was made into a life-time movie called ”A friend to die for”, or the UK title, ”Death of a cheerleader”.  In the movie, the story is told from Bernadette’s point of view, she is portrayed as the real victim who killed her classmate, while Kirsten Costas is portrayed as a mean-spirited bully, constantly teasing girls who were ‘socially below her.’.

A friend to die for did a good-job matching the personalities of both Kirsten and Bernadette. although somewhat exaggerated. According to an individual who attending the same school as the two girls during the early/mid 80’s, the only thing that was a bit off was the appearance. Kirsten Costa was younger than her killer, and shorter with brown hair, while the lifetime-movie depicted her as a  tall-blonde who is a little bit older than the jealous Bernadette.  Bernadette Protti however, is blonde in real-life and  taller than Kirsten.

Although the story below was published in Ladies’ Home Journal — and was the topic of the 1994 made-for-TV movie “Death of a Cheerleader”/”A Friend to Die For” starring Tori Spelling and Kellie Martin — this story has personal meaning to me, because I was a student at the same school. Along with the rest of the town, I watched this whole tale unfold sadly and slowly during the course of several months.
In addition to presenting the story as it was published in November of 1985, I have also added some photos from my own collection, including one from a trip Kirsten and I both took to Washington DC with a school group, as well as other pictures from our ’85 class yearbook.

The Murder of Bobby Kent (BULLY)

Bobby-Kent-MurderBobby Kent (May 12, 1973 – July 15, 1993)

Murder Of Robert ‘Bobby’ Kent

Bobby Kent had met Martin “Marty” Puccio in the third grade and instantly they became great pals. They lived close to one another and were always together at each others houses or riding bikes, etc. Soon it went from building ‘forts’ to liking girls and that’s when resentment, jealousy and hatred grew.

Toward the beginning of 1993 Martin (Marty) Puccio (aged 20) began dating Lisa Connelly (aged 18).

Being frustrated by how much time her boyfriend spent with Bobby, Lisa tried to distract him from Marty by setting up her friend Alice (Ali) Willis (aged 17) with Kent. They dated a few weeks but Bobby was abusive toward Ali so Ali so she cut off the relationship. In June, Marty confided to Lisa that Bobby had been abusive to him quite often over the years. Lisa tried to convince him to cut off his friendship, but Marty did not seem able to do that. By that time, Lisa knew she was pregnant by Marty and was determined that Bobby was not going to get in her way of a permanent relationship with Marty. Although Lisa admitted to having sex with Bobby as well as Marty, she maintained the baby was Marty’s. This baby, now a teenager, had a DNA test performed and discovered that she is in fact Bobby’s daughter. It is unknown if he fathered any other children before his death.

According to sources, for a few weeks prior to his murder, Bobby dated Ali and when she moved back with her parents in Palm Bay, Florida, and broke up with him, Kent said he was going to murder her and smother her baby unless she returned to Broward County to date him.

Lisa’s hatred for Bobby grew for a number a reasons including him beating and bullying Marty as well as raping Ali, her bestfriend. Bobby was also known to commonly refer to Lisa, who was overweight, as “fatass”, “tatonka”, “potlock” “chub” and “Shamu”, often encouraging and/or forcing Marty to do the same.

Allegedly, Lisa decided that Bobby needed to be eliminated permanently and started talking to Marty and other friends about murdering him. On Tuesday, July 13, 1993, Lisa called Ali and told her that “Bobby was planning to come to Palm Bay (where Ali was living) to murder her and smother her baby (by a previous relationship) unless she returned to Broward County to date him again.” Ali claimed Lisa asked her to come to her house to discuss murdering Bobby Kent. Ali went to Lisa’s house and brought two friends, her current boyfriend, Donald (Donny) Semenec (aged 17), and Heather Swallers (aged 18). Lisa had previously contacted a self-proclaimed “hit man,” named Derek Kaufman, who had been recommended by some friends. When Ali, Donny and Heather arrived, they all went to Kaufman’s home. They told him they wanted him to get a gun so they could kill Kent that night, but Kaufman told them he could not get a gun that fast. The four went back to Lisa’s house and were joined by Lisa’s cousin, Derek Dzvirko. Puccio apparently was not a part of these meetings on the 13th.

On July 14 around 11:30p.m. the six joined together at Marty’s house and discussed their plans and their roles. They had a lead pipe, two knives and a baseball bat. Marty had asked Bobby Kent to join them around 11:45pm. Marty told him that Ali was going to be there as well. Apparently Kent thought he might be able to hook up with his former girlfriend, not realizing that his best friend and ex girlfriend were helping with his murder.

All together the seven headed out to a construction site.  As soon as they got there Ali, in accordance with the plan, took Bobby off to a secluded spot where they were talking. Heather Swallers joined them there and while she and Ali distracted Bobby, Donny Semenec came up and stabbed Bobby in the neck with a knife. Bobby yelled out, “Marty, whatever I’ve done to make you mad, I’m sorry.” Then he asked for Marty’s help. Instead Marty stuck a knife in Bobby’s stomach. Derek Kaufman then approached and hit Bobby with the baseball bat, which was the final blow. After this was all done Derek Dzvirko helped dump the body. Lisa was not involved in the actual murder.

Willis was going to walk Bobby down to the water at Palm Bay, pretending to mend their ‘relationship.’ And Swallers was going to go down to Willis and Kent and talk about the crocodiles, which was the ”code word”

Conspirators:

Martin Joseph (Marty) Puccio – March 21, 1973 – Bobby’s best friend since childhood, boyfriend of Lisa Connelly.

Lisa Marie Connelly – July 31, 1974 – Marty’s girlfriend. Was angry at Kent for beating and bullying Marty as well as allegedly raping her best friend, Alice Slay. Kent was also known to commonly refer to Connelly (who was overweight) as “fatass”, “tatonka”, “potlock” “chub” and “Shamu”, often encouraging and/or forcing Puccio to do the same. On January 5, 1994 Lisa Connelly, who was Puccio’s girlfriend, gave birth to their daughter. She is in the custody of Connelly’s parents in Central Florida.

Alice Jean Slay (Ali Willis) – August 29, 1975 – Kent’s former girlfriend, set up with Kent by Connelly in the hopes that if he was with her, he’d leave Puccio alone. Allegedly involved in a teenage prostitution ring prior to Kent’s murder.

Donald Roth (Donny) Semenec Jr. – July 15, 1975 – Slay’s boyfriend at the time of the murder. Habitual drug user. Supposedly helped in the murder because he was angry at Kent for raping his girlfriend. Struck the first blow on Kent. Murder occurred on his 18th birthday.

Derek Leon Kaufman – May 8, 1973 – Self-proclaimed mafia hitman who the group enlisted to plan Kent’s murder. Had no association to any of the other conspirators prior to this. Was actually the leader of a gang of youths 7-10 years younger than he was, who committed petty crimes such as theft.

Derek George Dzvirko – November 2, 1973 – Connelly’s cousin who was enlisted for extra help by Connelly. Played a minor role in the murder, borrowed one of the baseball bats used to kill Kent from a friend. Along with Swallers, was offered and accepted a plea bargain in exchange for testimony that would help convict others in the group. The two were originally promised the same prison sentence, however Dzvirko got four extra years for attempting to lie on the witness stand.

Heather June Swallers – May 24, 1975 – Previous friend of Slay who had just gotten out of drug rehab. The member of the group deemed by the State of Florida to be the least culpable for Kent’s murder. Had no participation in the murder itself and ran and hid in Slay’s car once it started. Cut the same plea bargain as Dzvirko did and got the promised sentence because unlike him, she did not lie during her testimony.

The co-perpetrators were convicted and sentenced as follows:

Heather Swallers – second-degree murder and conspiracy (seven years imprisonment); Released February 14, 1998

Derek Dzvirko – second-degree murder and conspiracy (11 years imprisonment) Released October 1, 1999

Alice Willis – second-degree murder and conspiracy (40 years imprisonment, which was commuted on appeal to 17 years in prison. She was released on parole on September 16, 2001 and is currently under community supervision for 40 years)

Donald Semenec (aka Day) – second-degree murder and conspiracy (life and 15 years imprisonment) He is incarcerated at Columbia Annex DC number 963020

Derek Kaufman – first-degree murder and conspiracy (the jury recommended life and he was sentenced to life and 30 years imprisonment) He is incarcerated at Mayo/C.I. DC number 894391

Lisa Connelly – second-degree murder and conspiracy (life and five years imprisonment, which was reversed on appeal and reduced to 22 years; she was released on parole on February 3, 2004).

Martin Puccio – first-degree murder and conspiracy. He is incarcerated at Desoto Annex DC number 963022.

* Alice Willis, after serving her time for being 1 of the 7 involved in Bobby Kent’s Murder had finally decided to an interview, 18 years later.*

Today she is a 35-year-old  stay-at-home mother of four. Ali Willis was 17 when she helped plan the stabbing  and beating death of her ex-boyfriend. Willis said she was brought  into the mix by her best friend, Lisa Connelly. Connelly was pregnant with the  child of Kent’s best friend Marty Puccio. In 1993, Puccio said he felt he’d  “been pushed around” too much by Kent, claiming he was a bully.
Not too long after Willis  met Kent, Puccio and Connelly started plotting murder. Broward County detectives  said Lisa Connelly called her friend Willis to help in their plot and the group  grew from there.
Detective Frank Ilarraza  with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office worked on the case. “Ali requested others to  come along and do it,” Detective Ilarraza said. “It’s like it didn’t faze her.  They had total disregard for human life.”
But Willis said she thought  she was just visiting friends. Her new boyfriend Donny Semenec and friend  Heather Swallers came along. Lisa Connelly ‘s cousin, Derek Dzvirko, and a  self-proclaimed hitman Derek Kaufman were also involved. “Somebody said, ‘Oh, why  don’t you just kill him.’ You know, a flipping off the wall joke,” Willis told  NBC Miami.
Detectives said their  original plan was Willis would meet Bobby Kent at a construction site in Weston  and shoot him.
“I never had a gun,” Willis  said. “Lisa did have a gun on her. The gun  was just there.”
The next night, the “Broward Seven”  as they became known, tricked Kent into coming back to the construction site in  Weston. He thought they were drag racing, and Willis said she thought she was  there to witness a fight, not murder. “I got beat by that man,”  Willis said. “So yeah, I wanted to see him get beat up. I wanted him to know how  it feels.”
What happened that night  was made into a movie called “Bully” and Willis said the murder scene portrayed  in it is accurate. Willis acted as bait, leading Kent into a trap. It all  started with Willis’ new boyfriend, Donny Semenec, stabbing Kent in the neck.
Marty+puccio+and+bobby+kent
Actor Nick Stahl (left) played the part of Bobby Kent, portrayed as the ”bully” who was constantly abusing, degrading and teasing Marty Puccino (played by actor Brad Renfro, right, who died in 2008 in a drug overdose.) Renfro was portrayed as a ‘victim’ of Bobby Kent. A friend who secretly harbored a resentful hatred for his supposed ‘best friend’
“What I remember after that  was he screaming at Marty, Bobby’s yelling at Marty: ‘Get him, get him. Do  something, do something. He hit me, he hit me,'” Willis said. “I remember  standing there, and I seen Marty go like this. To me, it looked like he hauled  off and hit him. I’ll never forget the look on his face when this happened. I  looked down and there was blood everywhere … and he was holding his stomach …  and I just froze.”Marty Puccio stabbed Kent  multiple times and slit his throat twice. Finally, Derek Kaufman, who didn’t  even know Kent, went after him with a baseball bat.
The lead detective at the  time, Ilarraza said in his 30 years on the job, it is the most shocking case he  has ever worked. “This was very personal,”  Ilarraza said. “They got right on him – where you could smell him, where you  could hear him breathing – and that’s when they savagely killed him.”
Four days later, Lisa  Connelly’s cousin Derek Dzvirko confessed, leading police to Kent’s  body.
“As soon as I got out of  the car, you could smell the decomposing body,” Ilarraza said.
After her son’s murder,  Farah Kent told NBC Miami, she thought Willis was the mastermind, a lover scorned. “He didn’t want to see her  anymore,” Kent said. “That’s why I think the whole thing happened.”
But in court, it was proven  that it was Kent’s best friend Marty Puccio, and his girlfriend Lisa Connelly  behind the murder plan, but all seven helped carry it out.
In 1993, a detective  said, “If one of these people simply said, ‘No. This is wrong,’ I think the  whole group would’ve backed off their plans.”
Willis told NBC Miami, she doesn’t know why she didn’t  say anything to stop it. “It was fear, but it was  almost like being in a trance,” Willis said.
Marty Puccio, Donny Semenec  and Derek Kaufman were all sentenced to life in prison. The four who were part  of the planning but did not attack Kent, are now all out of jail.
Willis, originally  sentenced to 40 years, served eight.
“I do think I should have  gotten some prison time,” Willis said.  “I do agree with that totally, but I don’t believe I got off easy.” “It was a  big deal, but I didn’t kill him … I honestly didn’t believe that he would end up  dead. How can you feel remorse for something you didn’t do?”
But being a mom, Willis  said she does feel sorry for Kent’s parents. “I would tell them I’m  sorry I was there, I’m sorry I never said anything,” she said. “I am sorry I  didn’t try to stop it. I am sorry I didn’t say something.”
Willis was the only one of  the Broward Seen who agreed to an interview. She said she does not keep in touch  with any of the others.
Kent’s  parents still live in Broward County. They declined an interview saying it’s  been 18 years and they are ready to put their son’s murder behind  them.

The murder of Bobby Kent resulted in a best-selling true crime book in 1998, Bully: A True Story of High School Revenge (ISBN 0-380-72333-6), written by Jim Schutze. The book was adapted by Zachary Long (a pseudonym used by David McKenna after he demanded his name be removed from the film and Roger Pullis into the 2001 film, Bully, directed by Larry Clark. The story was also covered during an episode of the A&E series American Justice.
In the film, Puccio was portrayed by Brad Renfro, Kent was portrayed by Nick Stahl, Willis was portrayed by Bijou Phillips, Connelly was portrayed by Rachel Miner, Semenec was portrayed by Michael Pitt, Swallers was portrayed by Kelli Garner, Dzvirko was portrayed by Daniel Franzese, and Kaufman was portrayed by Leo Fitzpatrick.
